Socially awkward sitcom Big Bang Theory entered the hall of fame today with the release of its 100th milestone episode. The five seasons of comedy geekdom was celebrated by paying tribute to sci-fi in typical fashion, with a guest appearance by none other than Stephen Hawking. As if grossing over 15 million viewers in the latest series wasn’t enough. What is it about the Big Bang Theory that speaks to the inner nerd within all of us?

Here’s the formula. The show combines winning elements such as a stellar cast and sharp one-liners in the tradition of situational comedy, with good cultural timing in order to make a successful equation; no easy task in the jostling TV market. Big Bang Theory is written around four roommates who are all quirky sci-fi geeks. The inevitable addition of a blonde ‘normal’ avoids a tired stereotype by remaining genuinely humorous, warm and self-aware of its comedy. Cue five seasons of friendship, love and fractional division as the group live and learn together.

It may have something to do with the casting. Chemistry is created on-screen by some of the stars of the show sharing past sit-com history lessons. Leonard, Lesley Winkle and Sheldon’s mother (Johnny Galecki, Sarah Gilbert and Laurie Metcalfe) were all regulars on Nineties classic Roseanne, and the actors have clocked up miles in such prominent programming as Desperate Housewives, Entourage and ER. With new rising star performances by Jim Parsons as the eccentric, uptight and essentially loveable Sheldon; the cast is a force to be reckoned with.

We mentioned the one-liners, and the script is thick with them. This can be a tired formula and the pitfalls of American sitcom style comedy can include its inability to translate past these into something bigger, better and attractive to all audiences. Big Bang Theory’s use of a studio audience and a tried and tested Yankee method of comedy actually works, however. A mixture of likeable characters and a comedic social awkwardness that the inner geek in all of us can actually relate to is backed up by genuinely funny scripting.

Big Bang Theory’s popularity stems from the ebbing, flowing but ever-present anti-culture of geek-chic. Retro posters and T-shirts of Spock have never been so in demand and lately, even Rhianna has been spotted wearing a bowtie and white ankle socks in a pastiche of Nineties Nerd. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Big Bang Theory proves that the underdog is loved the world over, and that geeks are here to stay.

My boss once asked me, “Before going to work, what is that you do?” Without second though I answered him, “I laugh”. Well, it is true! In my line of work, being a Nurse, presence of mind and a lot of patience are needed for me to fulfill my job accordingly to save people. But, I still believe that laughter is considered as the best treatment of all. This is the primary reason that I need to laugh before going to work. My being humorous also allows my patients to, at least, forget the mental, physical, physiological and emotional pain to go away for even a while. Luckily, I had the job!

You laugh because you are happy and you are happy so you laugh. Laughing is free and it is not an act of craziness if you laugh at yourself while facing the mirror. You start your day with a good laugh and end it with a smile. That is how I do it. I laugh at myself and I feel glad and delighted. Also, it enhances my confidence that I can do anything. Laughing relaxes you and enhances self-belief.

As I can recall, one of my patients, who was an elder, was confined in the hospital due to lack of appetite. She did not want to eat, so, we needed to put a tube through her nose going to her stomach. this is where her food will go and pass. When she woke up, I asked her why she did not want to eat. She said, she has no desire to eat any kind of food. Then I told her that one of the best things in life is to sleep and eat! She just smiled at me. So, I told her that every time her children asked her if she wanted to have something to eat, I told her to say yes, but it must be two pieces of whatever food she wants. She looked at me in confusion and I told her, “Well, the one piece of food is for you and the other one for me!” She laughed! Next day when I got back to work, I saw there were two pieces of hamburgers she have on her hands. We started eating and after two days, she was transferred to an ordinary ward because she was eating already.

I know that everybody has his own little funny characters. Nobody was able to live life without laughing or smiling sometimes. We all need some humor in our life to overcome the pressures and difficulties of life. To be able to be funny, you have to be yourself. No matter how difficult life is treating you, all you have to do is to laugh at your life! No one in this world is happy to see a person who is sad and misery. But, everyone likes to see people smiling with one another and laughing with each other.

Laughter is like a virus that infects other people. You do not need to have a Masters Degree in laughter just to make people laugh. You just have to believe in yourself that you can make people laugh without trying so hard. Bear in mind that, a happy person has a happy life.

The UK is known for a few things. We have tried our level best, giving the world high-brow Oxbridge slapstick by Stephen Fry and Rowan Atkinson. We have produced honest and loveable flat-cap and whippet types like George Formby. We have represented the common man with acts such as Peter Kaye and Bernard Manning tapping into the heart of working-mens-club drollery for generation after generation. British comedy at its heart is about representing its people, in all forms and however big, bad and ugly. Pompous? Perhaps. Politically incorrect? Sometimes? Vaguely smutty? Always. But UK comedy reflects the wordish, bone-dry and razor-sharp wit of the actual British public, not a roomful of TV executives.

Just putting it out there, is it at all possible that America’s rating has more to do with its conglomerate monopolisation of our global airwaves than its actual talent for laughter as a nation? How is it that tired old formats and repetitive programming like Big Bang Theory (geeks and one hot blonde) and Will and Grace (gay best friend again?) are held in higher esteem than some of the best and most intelligent, challenging comedy that the UK has to offer?

If British humour isn’t that funny, why do shows like The Office and Shameless end up being regurgitated and tweaked for the Yankee masses, to the greatest of acclaim? It’s because our raw talent and ever-evolving comedic discourses are admired the world over and that quirky, acerbic wit unique to UK humour can’t be matched.
