Mafia Wars, the 2009 Webby People’s Choice Award winner in the Games category, can be found on such popular sites as Yahoo, MySpace, Facebook, and even as an iPhone app. Like many games, you work your way up through different levels though you begin this game as a mere street grifter, looking for your big chance to join one of the Mafia’s many operations. As you move through the various game levels, there are four elements that you need to collect – cash, energy, stamina and health – and the more you collect, the higher the level you can move to and the better the rewards.
The game’s initial stage of play will gain your player some experience points, after which you will choose the type of character you want to play throughout the game and your Mafia name. Choose your character type carefully, though, as you won’t be able to change it after this point.
Choosing between Mogul, Maniac, and Fearless will impact how quickly you earn money as well as the speed at which your health regenerates. After this element is addressed, you will be given your initial skill points, which will help you at different points throughout the game.
Once all of the basic setup has been addressed, the basic premise is that you want to do tasks in the game that help your Mafia family to grow. This usually involves going on social networking sites and recruiting people to add to your Mafia Wars family. This can be a great way to learn about and interact with real people to see if they share the same interests as you outside of the game.
Your character will gain experience and cash as you complete jobs in the course of the game, and eventually, as you increase in levels, more jobs and features of the game become available to you. As your cash, health, and experience increase, more players will decide to become part of your Mafia family.
You will want to master jobs early in the game, because that will help you later to grow your family effectively and rapidly. Loot and Collectibles are other features that can be collected later in the game.
The game is set in New York City, but there are three additional locations to which the players can travel. These are Cuba, Bangkok, and Moscow, places that you can conquer as the head of a Mafia family.
The highest level that can be achieved by a player is the “Boss” level, which is the ultimate ambition for anyone who joins the Mafia Wars universe. All you need are the street smarts, the negotiating skills and some old-fashioned wheeling and dealing to go from low-level flunky to “Boss” of your own Mafia family.
