Batman Halloween Costumes

By Theresa Happe

Many of the popular television characters have come and gone through the ages. There are few that can boast 80 years of popularity as Batman can. It’s no miracle that all of the Batman characters have been popular Halloween costumes each year. Several generations have become fans and each generation is captured by new toys and gadgets to collect. Batman first debuted back in 1939 as a popular super hero comic. It didn’t come to television until 1966. Over the years, other Batman characters have come and gone, but Robin, Batgirl and the Joker have remained popular throughout the years.

Part of the intrigue of the Batman series is the secrecy of Batman’s true identity. Out of costume, he is Bruce Wayne, the wealthy businessman who profited from real estate investments. As a child, Bruce Wayne’s parents were murdered, sparking his desire to avenge their deaths. Batman became the vigilante of Gotham, fighting the most dangerous threats to the city. Batman’s powers come from his intellect, not super human powers like other super hero characters. Batman only lasted 2 short years as a television series, but returned to tv as a cartoon. Batman came to the movie screens in 1989 and been a blockbuster hit with each new sequel.

For many years, no female counterpart played a role in the Batman comics. In the 60s, there was speculation that Batman and Robin were supposed to be lovers. As a result, Batwoman was introduced. Batgirl entered as her sidekick, but both characters were eliminated. Batgirl returned as a different character, Barbara Gordon, daughter of polic commissioner James Gordon. She was much more popular than the previous Batwoman and Batgirl combined. Batgirl lasted about 8 years in the comics, but made her return in the 1999 movie.

The Joker is one of Batman’s most popular villains. He is responsible for many of the tragedies in Batman’s life. His freaky clown-like appearance is the result of falling into a tank of chemicals, resulting in his skin white, his hair green and his lips bright red. The Joker’s crimes are committed with weapons that would be otherwise harmless. They are pranksters weapons – an acid squirting flower, an electric buzzer, or a deck of bladed playing cards. After all these years, the Joker still ranks as one of the top 100 villains of all times.

Batman is always made fresh and new for current day viewers with the introduction of new technology, futuristic weapons and special effects. But, the story behind Batman’s vigilantism has kept the interest of viewers and readers for over 80 years due to the exciting heroism of defeating intriguing villains with super hero methods. With each new Batman movie, the interest is regenerated, sparking the creation of new toys and games, capturing the interest of new young children. We will continue to see the Batman character costumes each Halloween for as long as its creators continue to produce action packed entertainment.
