Beautify Your Patio Or Deck With An Outdoor Fireplace

By Jessica Colby

For centuries, fireplaces have played an important and central role in family life, both as a tool used to cook meals and a source of heat during the winter. The invention of modern appliances and central heating systems, have made them almost obsolete as necessary indoor appliances but more and more people are opting to install an outdoor fireplace on their patio or deck.

With a quality fireplace you are able to enjoy the great outdoors any time of the year, even during the cold winter months. In addition to providing warmth, you can increase the aesthetic value of any outdoor space with a fireplace installation. If warmth is your main goal, choose a design that mimics a campfire and allows people to sit around the entire perimeter. The more traditional design will only emit heat in an area roughly the shape of a small cone right in front of the unit. If aesthetics if more important, there are many decorative choices available.

Every city has its own rules and regulations about fireplaces that are kept outdoors. Make sure you have educated yourself about the law in your area before you make any final decisions about your own project.

There are some areas that have banned wood burning units to reduce the risk of fire from flying embers. Wood burning units release less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere but there are specific weather conditions that cause smoke particles to be trapped in the air.

In addition to being a fire hazard, burning wood can be messy, especially when it comes time to clear away the ashes. With a gas unit, there are logs made of ceramic, concrete or ceramic fiber that are designed to look like the real thing. These logs will give off ample light and warmth in the immediate vicinity and there is no worry about burning embers.

These gas units are fueled with propane or gas. If you live in a heavily populated area, natural gas will be very easy to find. Propane is more expensive but will be the only option if you live in a remote location. Propane tanks are refillable and are equipped with a regulator designed to control the flow of gas. Ignition is quick and it can be lit by remote control or manually with the turn of a knob.

The chiminea was introduced in Mexico and is basically a portable fireplace made out of clay, cast iron or aluminum. The bulbous box is often shaped like a teardrop and has a large opening for the fire and a slender neck that acts like a chimney to vent smoke and facilitate airflow for a more consistent burn.

Your personal needs and preferences will dictate what type of fireplace you end up purchasing. A gas fireplace is the perfect choice if you want something that requires a minimal amount of maintenance. There are no ashes to discard, so there is none of the mess associated with burning wood. If you choose a metal design, you will want to purchase a cover to protect it from rust.

Make your patio or deck more functional with a stylish outdoor fireplace. This simple installation will instantly beautify your outdoor living space and give your family a comfortable place to gather.
