The time to start considering Halloween costumes-uniforms is not during the night before that big party but months and months in advance. That way you have plenty of time to plan that perfect costume and if need be find another one just in case someone decides to copy your idea. So, before you begin searching for that great costume do some research first and find out what the most popular ideas for that year are. There will always be four main categories that costumes will fall into. These categories are Literary Characters, Historical Figures, Movie Characters, and the good old standby favorites. By looking at these categories you will be able to avoid being the third or fourth person showing up to that party in a particular costume.
Literary characters have always been a popular category when it comes to Halloween outfits. Fairy tale characters in particular have and will always be a favorite. Little Red Riding Hood has recently come back into vogue but with a new and sultry twist. With a scantily clad Red Riding Hood it is no wonder why the Big Bad Wolf would come a-knocking’. Other figures like Alice from Alice in Wonderland have also received an updated look. The Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, and the Cheshire Cat are favorites but if you want something truly unique, try going as the Jabberwocky. While it is a sure thing that there will be at least a few Alice’s at any given party modern literary characters might be harder to find and will make a great choice. Judge Holden from Cormac McCarthy’s ‘Blood Meridian’ is a fantastic choice. Cold, calculating, and downright scary, Judge Holden is an imposing man perfectly suited for the Halloween crowd.
Of course, there is a bit of a problem should you choose to use a character too obscure for the mainstream crowd. You certainly do not want to go as the lead from a book that no one but you a few intellectually elite has read. Well, if the party is being held by those types of people then go ahead and aim for something truly off beat but just be mindful of the crowd.
Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it so why not spend that study time searching for a costume idea. The great Caesar, cowboys, Indians, and even Jack the Ripper feature prominently here. Instead of using the same old guys look at other eras of history. The Battle of the Bulge, early American figures, and even great explorers like Magellan may be that perfect mix of uniqueness and originality that garners you some notoriety at the party.
Movies will always be the most popular source of inspiration when it comes to Halloween outfits. It is easy to just go with whatever box office hit was just playing at the theater for an idea but remember that everyone else will be looking at that movie too. So, if you really want to go as someone from a movie look at the classics. Those techni-color musicals are a great choice along with anything from the 1980s and even the 1970s.
Last and certainly not least are the Monsters. Those guys from the old horror movies and B-reel movies from the silver screen. Dracula, The Mummy, and even a regular old moaning, groaning, shuffling zombie area annual favorites. While you can just as easily make these costumes as buy them, many people fall back on these when pressed for time. And sure you can customize and even update these classic movie monsters you should really aim for something a bit more modern and a bit more unique.
Really, it comes down to planning and originality. There are plenty of shops where you can purchase a great Halloween costumes but this will have to be done early to prevent shops from selling out. Be mindful of the popular trends and movies if you are looking for something unique and do not be afraid to think outside of the box. It is Halloween after all and come November first you will not have to go outside in something embarrassing until next year. So when you are out searching for those perfect costumes-uniforms be aware of how important originality plays into your decision and be creative.
