Famous Jewish Films

There are numberless films that can be considered “Jewish films” since they present one or more aspects that are related to Jewish history, culture, religion or tradition. In this article we chose to mention and review three Jewish films that not only they were popular among the audience, they were also very influential:
The Chosen: this film follows two characters that are from Jewish origins as they grow up in Brooklyn during the 40′s. Although they belong to the same ethnic group, there is a big gap between them due to their religious views as one is a religious Jew practicing the Jewish law while the other one is a modern Jew who supports Zionism.
The film is set in 1940′s Brooklyn. The story involves Reuven and Danny who are two best friends belonging to Zionist and Hassidic faiths respectively. Despite having a conflicting religious faith, both of them discover their friendship through their shared passion in stickball.
Fiddler on the Roof is a film from 1971 that was directed by Norman Jewison and stars Chaim Topol. The film focuses on Tuvia, a milkman who undergoes shaking experiences when the world around him changes significantly while he is trying to keep the Jewish tradition. He has to deal with both his stubborn daughters and the division of Russia.
Fiddler on the Roof is directed by Norman Jewison. It walks through the experiences and reactions of Tevye and his family after the division of Anatevka (Tsarist Russia) into a minor Orthodox Jewish and a major Orthodox Christian section.Additional cast of the film includes Norma Crane as Tevye’s wife Golde and the fiddle played by Tutte Lemkow.
Schindler’s List (1993):Directed by Steven Spielberg, Schindler’s List is yet another film adapted from a novel by the name of Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Kineally. The protagonist, Oskar Schindler is a German entrepreneur who attempts to save Jews of Polish origin from the Holocaust by giving them jobs and shelter in his factory.
The film focuses on Oscar, a German businessman who wants to exploit the war condition to make a profit. Once he realizes the Jews are destined to death he undergoes a radical change and try to save as many Jews as he can by providing them work certificates. The film won a wide success and received seven Academy Awards. The film was also chosen to be on the 100 best American films list.
