Exactly What Are Tribute Bands?

By Carley Shaw

Tribute Bands are live music bands. They specialize in performing music that pays homage or tribute to rock or pop or any kind of music icons or bands of yester years who are extremely popular. Tribute bands are thus taken well in parties or ceremonies where the audience loves music, and share the fun. Such specialized performance leaves the audiences and guests with a memory they can cherish.

Tribute Bands may consist of one or more musicians. For instance the band that is paying tribute to Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra or Bob Dylan will have a single singer who carries the attitude and attire of the legend. The singer sings the cover version of the greatest hits of the legend and impersonates the star on stage. He/she may dress like the icon, carry his air and mannerism and even have a make up to look like the icon.

There may also be tribute bands which are actually live music bands who play the songs of famous groups. Examples that can be given are of those bands playing Pink Floyd numbers or the Beatles, Rolling Stones , etc.

The tribute bands originated in late 60′s when the Beatles was on a roll. Everybody wanted to listen to Beatles live and that led to the rise of the cover bands singing Beatles songs at the local pubs. In the times to come tribute bands started singing songs of every other famous rock bands. The trend was set and it finally became popular to have live bands playing the music of the favorite icons at one’s own private party.

It should be noted that tribute bands are different from Spin-off bands. Tribute bands consist of new musicians copying famous bands, but on the other hand spin off bands have at least one member from the original band to perform with them.

Again, there exists a very thin line of difference between tribute band and cover bands, both of which are extremely popular in case of functions like weddings, corporate events and other private parties. The difference lies in the fact that the cover bands merely play songs of other past artistes and not necessarily of only one person or rather imitating the original musician’s very style of singing and other mannerisms like in the case of tribute bands.

The tribute bands of this generation do not exactly copy the songs of the original band, but present to us something new. The songs are, often, presented in a completely new style. The band Betallica, is one of the tribute bands of the new generation, who play Beatles songs in the Metallica style.

There are some other tribute bands of the 21st century which try to be different from others, like those of an all female tribute band for Iron Maiden, while there’s also an all male tribute group for Maddona. Mention should be made of The Muffin Men, who play the hits of Frank Zappa in their own way, without impersonating the style or clothes of the same.
