Is Playing Guitar More A Learned Skill Or A Talent?

There are people out there who believe that playing guitar really good is a gift from God. A talent that you are born with, something that you either have or not. Is it true? Do you really just need a talent to play guitar like a pro? The answer is – not really.

Of course, not having talent is a nice excuse to not make an effort. And people generally like excuses, so when they see a great guitarist they don’t admire his or her dedication and years or even decades of hard work, they say – wow, look how talented he is. He must be born under a lucky star. How unfortunately that we are not.

But in reality it has nothing to do with luck. If you want to master a musical instrument, what you need is mainly hard work. Having a natural predisposition – or talent if you will – to learn with more ease is certainly welcome. But you will still have to put a lot of effort in it.

But talent alone is not going to get you very far. You can’t just pick up a guitar and start playing like a pro, just because you are talented. Believe me, it never happened and it never will.

If you want to be good at it, you will need commitment, determination, and a lot of practice. And you will need some sort of lessons. They don’t have to be expensive, you don’t necessarily need a private instructor, although it’s great, if you can afford it, but you do need guidance.

Finding guidance shouldn’t be a problem in this day and age. You can find very good guitar lessons on DVDs. It’s not as good as a private instructor, but it will get you there.

Okay, there you have it. Being good at playing guitar is not something that you are born with, it’s something that you learn. It’s a learned skill and like any skill – the more you do it the better you get.

Want to know what is the best guitar learning method? A lot of practice and good guidance. For more, see guitar instructional dvd.
