Portable MP3 Players – An Overview

By Ricky Belekan

Portable media players, or MP3 players, have been on the market since 1997, when the Audio Highway Listen Up player was first released. The basic design was around since 1979 when Kane Kramer invented a device that could only play up to 3.5 minutes of audio. The two decade wait, in part was due to how to convey the audio files. When early prototypes were software-based, they were energy hogs, unfeasible. When a decoder chip was invented that could read from flash memory, the industry could flourish.

An portablemp3player is simply a portable media and music storage and retrieval device. Today’s MP3 players are available in a wide array of budgets, styles, and tweaks. Some are basic music storage and play, while others include video recording, apps, games, web browsing, etc. Choosing an MP3 player depends on a few basic things.

Since we are concerned with playing music, sound quality should be a high priority in any choice. Sound quality, in part, depends on price, but also on brand. The iPod series is a popular brand due to bells and whistles, but without a decent headphone amp, it lacks in quality. Reviews show very favorably for Cowon iAudio or S9, Sony products, Samsung YP-P3, and MicroSoft Zune HD.

Music can be stored internally with an impressive hard drive or be stored to a memory chip such as a MicroSD card. Players such as the 160 GB iPod Classic and the Zune with 16, 32, or 64 GB are examples of internal memory devices. Newer generations of iPods, Sony, Cowon, Coby and many others make use of a memory storage chip.

Many newer Mp3 players can not only play videos but also record and download them to. There are many affordable MP3 players that have video capabilities like many iPod products, X-series Walkman, Microsoft Zune, and Archos products. With a player like this you want to consider the screen size and resoultion.

All of the many additional and new features can be found in the more top of line portablemp3player products. Many can record video, pick up XM satellite, tune into FM, and all kinds of different apps. The iPhone even comes includes phone and camera capabilities. Many of the competitors of the iPhone are now trying to catch up to the new advancements they are making but no have reached them yet.

Everyone must consider the budget they are on before making any purchasing decision. Some MP3 player models can cost over $500 and have larger screens, more memory, and other really fantastic features. Or you can go for a simpler player that only plays audio files that costs around $100. Many consider the iPod Shuffle series a great choice for anyone who is on a budget and are a lot cheaper than newer models.

Some of the best brands out there would have to be Microsoft Zune HD, SanDisk Sansa products and the Apple iPod sereis. Thos that can afford higher priced models may want to look into the gneration iPod touch or nano, Or Cowon Zune products. For anyone that is on a budget think about the iPod shuffle or even the SanDisk line since both are high quality and affordable.
