When you visit London it wouldn’t be complete without you going to see one of the many shows that are on at the various theatres in this city. If you happen to be travelling with children then you may find it better to actually attend one of the afternoon (matinee) performances instead of the evening ones. In this article we look at what we feel are the top 5 matinee shows in London to go and see at the present time.

1. Mama Mia

For more than 8 years now this particular show has been wowing audiences around the world. Not only will you find yourself singing along to the many Abba songs that are in the show if you aren’t careful you will soon find yourself up in the aisles dancing. As well as a show that warms your heart it is a show that makes you want to laugh out loud.

2. Lion King

This adaptation of one of Disney’s most loved animated films will redefine your expectations of what it is like to go to the theatre today. The music and the costumes all help to transport you to the majestic Serengeti Plains as you are taken on a journey following the very powerful and moving life of Simba the lion cub. Unfortunately this show is not suitable for children under the age of 5.

3. Billy Elliot

If you happen to becoming to London with teenagers then this is one of the top 5 matinee shows in London that is worth considering going to. It is the stage version of the Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated film that was released in 2000. This show is suitable only for children over the age of 12 due to their being quite a lot of strong long and stage violence in it.

4. Wicked

Through this show you can learn more about the witches who played such an important role in the story “The Wizard of Oz”. You are taken back to a time when Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West were young girls and who formed a friendship whilst learning sorcery at the same school. For those who have already seen this show they found it to be a truly unforgettable experience.

5. Shrek

This one of our top 5 matinee shows in London to see is based on the story and characters in the book of the same name written by William Stieg and which was then made in to an Oscar winning animated film by DreamWorks. Not only does the show include many of the songs that feature in the film that children love but a number of new ones. This is a show that not only children will love seeing but also many adults.
