Swansea Photographer: Does The Photography Business Pay?

By Rachael Donavan

A Swansea photographer who hits the headlines regularly is Collin Davies of High Society Photography.

Even though he had been recognised for his work previously it was the introduction to digital photography that really improved the range and quality of images that Collin could produce. Through the use of software together with the high quality pictures Collin found he show his customers some amazing options.

Whilst he may have been previously rewarded for his traditional photography the start of digital photography charged his imagination and his enthusiasm for this new medium resulted in a very early attendance at Adobe’s first training sessions on producing outstanding images using the Adobe Photoshop software.

Never afraid to spend money on his business Collin had High Society’s studio filled with this new technology and it wasn’t long before Photoshop helped him create many amazing images and giving him the opportunity to apply different techniques which amazed his customers.

Recognised around Swansea and South Wales as a top rated wedding photographer the arrival of digital cameras and the software enabled him to take photographs that had previously been restricted by film cameras.

Euipment using film had long been a problem due to the poor lighting within a church and the restrictive use of flash.

As digital developed specialist companies such as Kodak developed specialised digital cameras specifically designed to overcome such situations and although extremely expensive and cost prohibitive for many people Collin and his company High Society Photography were one of the first purchasers of this new technology in the UK.

A modern day entrepreneur, Collin knows that customers crave more than an image, they demand imagination and his ongoing purchasing of the newest technologies enables him to explore different options.

The role has changed over the years and taking a quick set of photos and producing the images for the customer is no longer acceptable.

Digital cameras have the ability to present an image directly from the camera to the screen resulting in quick adjustments to composition or lighting for that perfect photograph.

However, the opportunities that avail themselves once the picture has been taken is now endless. From software manipulation of the image to the medium on which it is presented, the choices are many.

In the past the photographer would have taken a series of photos, presented proofs, customer decides which proofs and what sizes, photographer provides finished photos, end of process.

Now you can select from a series of mediums from print to disc and in professional studios such as High Society’s you can even see your print displayed in various frames projected onto the wall at actual size enabling you to choose a print and frame together knowing exactly what the finished project will look like on your wall!
