Samsung has become one of the leaders in the commercialization of flat panel HDTV technology. Their latest sets include LED back-lighting, which replaces the fluorescent lighting systems that were used previously for LCD TV sets. The use of LED technology has made it possible to produce HDTV sets that are lighter and thinner than previous sets, and also produce significantly better picture quality. The Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA LED 3D HDTV is an example of this high quality.

Because an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) does not produce any light, but rather acts as a shutter that controls the passage of light through the display, all LCD displays require a back-light in order to be seen in dim lighting conditions. The LCD part of the display simply acts as a “shutter” that either allows light to pass through the display panel, or blocks it. It is like a microscopic venetian blind: when the crystals in a display cell are aligned in a perpendicular direction relative to the screen, light can pass through. When the crystals are aligned parallel to the display, the passage of light is blocked.

While an LCD display can be seen in bright light (for example, a digital watch or clock face), in order to be seen in dim lighting conditions there must be a light source behind the LCD display screen that provides illumination, in other words, a back-lighting system. The first LCD TV sets were back-lit by a fluorescent tubes, which provide white light. Each picture element or”pixel”, that is used to create a TV picture is small spot in the display that contains three microscopic filters that provide the primary TV colors: red, green, and blue (the familiar RGB you’ve seen in TV specs).

A color TV image is created by regulating the amount of visibility for every LCD point that regulates the light passing through every one of the color filters, in every one of the pixels that create the entire picture. To get an HDTV picture, there are 1,080 scan lines of pixels, every one of which has 1920 pixels – a total of over 2,000,000 pixels that produce each picture, or frame of a TV broadcast. Each of these three “screens” is controlled independently to control the color that produces each pixel, for each frame of the TV frame. The image for an HDTV screen is renewed at a rate of either 120 Hz, or 240 Hz (120 to 240 times per sec.) depending upon the version.

The Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA LED 3D HDTV set uses an “edge lighting” system to provide the back-light for its picture. In this system, very bright white-light LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are placed around the edge of the screen frame. A diffuser plate then distributes this light through the entire face of the display. The use of an LED lighting system means that the TV requires much less energy to operate. This set is extremely efficient: based on a usage rate of five hours per day, and an electricity rate of $0.11 per Kwh, it would cost about $14/year to operate this set. When the set is turned off, it consumes just 0.07 Watts of power. That amounts to 0.6 Kwh/yr, which would cost less than $0.07 based on the same electric rates – no “electricity vampire” here!

Among all the other great Specifications, this UN40D6420UFXZA Samsung set is loaded with something that Samsung refers to as “Smart Apps” – apps which are the actual foundation of their “Smart TV” system. All these “Apps” permit you to use the Television set to interact with the Internet, and download content from the Web from providers like Hulu Plus, Netflix, Pandora, and many others.

Another feature of this set is its use of “Allshare DLNA Technology”. DLNA stands for “Digital Living Network Alliance”. It represents an “interoperability protocol” that makes it possible for various electronic devices to link together to enable file sharing and data transmission. Samsung’s “Allshare” makes it easy to synch up most of your DLNA-enabled devices with your Samsung TV set, which means that you can use all the media files on your computer, iPhone, and other devices on your HDTV set as well. Add the optional LinkStick, and you can have wireless access as well.

Also included with the Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA is a feature called ConnectShare Movies. This allows you to play music, watch videos, or display pictures from a USB Flash Drive. All you need to do is plug the drive into the set’s USB port.

The quality of the pictures you will see on the Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA is improved by the Ultra Clear Panel at the front of the screen. It absorbs light from the surroundings and almost totally eliminates the reflections that usually appear on a TV screen. This results in a picture with more intense blacks and improved contrast, resulting in a cleaner, sharper image with improved shadow detail.

Having this set will greatly improve your TV watching enjoyment, and will make it easy to interface with all your other media, including your computer, other personal devices, and the Internet.
