Types Of Scottish Landscape Paintings

By Deidre Robbins

When people think of Scotland there are certain things that immediately spring to mind. One of the things is the variety of scenery that can be found across the country. These different things can be found in various paintings so what exactly are the main themes of Scottish landscape paintings?

These recurring themes are so popular that a huge number of prints are sold each year as well as the originals. It should perhaps come as no surprise that castles make regular appearances in Scottish landscape paintings. The castle or ancient ruin does not even have to be the main feature of the painting but can be just set to one side in the mist. A lot of people put castles and romance together so an artist including this in the painting can add a touch of that to the overall feel.

Scotland is also always linked with hills and lochs. These features are probably the most common that are found in paintings of this type with them often being the main focus of the painting. This type of scene has been covered by a large number of artists who specialise in landscapes.

A number of these paintings of hills and lochs are accompanied by dramatic colours in order to stress the feeling of moody sky and the Scotch mist along with rain. This does of course go along with the concept of Scotland not having the best weather so seeing it in paintings is relatively common.

You may be aware of Highland cattle in Scotland. They are recognisable by their long orange hair and horns and tourists love seeing them with their sad faces. Due to the way that people love them they can often be seen in paintings situated in Scotland as it helps people to know where it is located.

However just as with castles they are not always the main focus of the painting. However it is more common for them to be central than it is with castles due to the variety of places where they can be included. But with all of these things you should not expect to see each aspect combined into the one painting.

So lastly you can see how Scottish landscape paintings really focus on the things mostly associated with Scotland. Castles, lochs, hills, cattle and the rain can all be found. With so many artists having worked in this area you certainly shall have enough examples to choose from.
