How To Make More Money On eBay Than Everyone Else
By Jesse Holmes
Finding products or a niche with good profit margins might seem like the hardest thing to figure out when selling on eBay. Maybe you’ve been frustrated when you bought a list of ‘authentic wholesalers and drop shippers’ and found that the items on the list sell on eBay for less than the ‘wholesale price.’
Now it’s obvious that it’s not the best business model to sell stuff for less than you pay for it. The only exception is that you have a strategy to have a ‘loss leader’ or overall strategy to make up for the losses in the front end. That’s an advanced strategy, so don’t worry about it if you’re just getting started selling on eBay. As a beginner, you should always sell items for more than what you buy them.
Also, I don’t want you to get stuck in the ‘dropshipping’ trap. I’ve wasted hours and hours literally going through every single product in a dropshipping company’s catalog only to find out that none of them are profitable to sell on eBay.
One of the best ways to make money on eBay is to see what the big sellers are doing and then just copy them. Ask, “how are they moving inventory?” Yes, most buyers are looking for the cheapest price, but there are more factors you need to consider as well.
Let’s say you are looking for something specific. You go on eBay and look around for the best price. Yet, that seller looks untrustworthy. You’ll probably buy from another seller, even if the price is a bit higher because of the “trust” factor.
Some people think that if they are the cheapest price on eBay, that will guarantee them maximum sales. While that might be true in the short-term, chances are that their profit margins will be so small that they won’t be in business for long. Remember that you’re in business to provide an experience for your customer. This includes a great product at a good price. Also, it means that you make a reasonable profit.
So how do you enter a cut-throat competitive marketplace? How do you earn business when it seems like everyone just wants the lowest price?
There are a few different ways. It’s a big step for a lot of people to purchase an item they’ve never held from a seller they’ve never seen before. In order to make people choose you over your competitors even if they have a lower price, you need to first draw in the customer to your listing. Many people search by the lowest price first, so you need to overcome that by drawing a person’s eye away from that price tag and towards your killer gallery picture and ultra-relevant listing title. Once you can get that click you have a better chance of closing that buyer.
Once they land on your listing, yes your feedback has much to do with trust, but also the professionalism of your listing. You need to position yourself in a way that shows you are a trustworthy quality seller who is dedicated to providing the best customer experience.
How do you show that you are a professional seller? Make sure your listing looks good (with a professional template), have clearly defined policies, clear pictures, and a good description that you’ve taken the time to create. Don’t just copy and paste it from somewhere else.
Have you ever tried to buy something on eBay and wondered if the seller is legitimate? Have you wondered whether or not the seller would run away with your money? Now, step back into your shoes as a seller. You don’t want any doubts in the mind of your buyers. Your buyers will be able to tell by how your listing looks whether you are a reputable seller or not. Buyers do business with sellers that they trust.
Perception is reality and if you can set yourself apart from the little leagues and model some of the real successful sellers you’ll have an edge over anyone else just looking to get started selling on eBay.
