Different Types of Vices
By Jeff Foster
Vices are versatile tools and, as such, there is a wide range in the types of vices available on the market. There are vices that are designed for general uses, as well as special vices that are designed for very specific tasks. Regardless of the type of vice you need to complete your project, vices are easy to find.
Perhaps the most common of all vices is the engineer’s bench vice. This is the type most often seen in machine shops and automotive repair facilities. The most common uses for these vices are for grinding and cutting steel bars and various parts. You should take note though that if you are working with metal the jaws should have a grooved metal facing, and if you are working with wood the facing should be the same to prevent damage to the wood you are working with.
A three way tilting vice is one that is going to be used for more precision type work. The settings on this type of vice allow for both 45 and 90 degree angling when cutting or grinding to exact specifications. The base on these vices is also able to turn a full 360 degrees to allow for even more precise work.
The toolmakers steel vice is yet another type of vice. This type is used when the work involved warrants maximum stability and precision. These are available as screwless model and screw model. When different types of precision work are to be done on various parts on a work piece, it is better to use a screwless model steel vice, because this is more precise than the screw model. The peculiarity about this type is its alien key and also the vertical and horizontal “V” grooves in the sliding jaw. The alien key enables locking the vice in any position of ones choice. The “V” groove makes it easy to work on round objects.
Small handheld vices are perfect for making precise projects easy enough for anyone to do. They are great for filing smaller objects that do not easily fit into larger vices. Some handheld vices are small enough to sand down small parts such as screws or nuts, saving time fumbling with a tool too large for the job.
This is only a brief listing of the variety of vices that can be seen in today’s market, but this will surely help you to have rough idea of the vast range of vices that can be had.
