Simple Steps On Ways To Ramp Up Your Car

By Blake Jacobs

It is very important for any driver to have emergency tools in his automobile such as jump cables. Making sure that these tools are readily available can aid any motorist in the event that the car goes out of battery. The most usual excuse why this arises is when the headlights are not switched off. If you end up in this situation all you will need is a jump cable and a kind-hearted Samaritan to help you.

Whenever you have these two factors working to your advantage, you should be prepared to ramp up your car by plugging the jump cables to the car battery of your new-found buddy. It is highly recommended if your jump cables are not less than 10 feet long. Having the added bandwidth will make it a lot easier to attach the cables to both vehicles. There are a few things that you must take a look at prior to when you jump start your vehicle. Initially, just before you do anything else, be sure the batteries are not frozen. This is very crucial mainly because initiating a frozen battery can cause an explosion.

Next, give the battery terminals a quick check. If there are blue or green molds all over it, you must clear it first by using a wire brush. For the meantime, just get rid of the molds and prepare a mental note to replace your batteries ASAP. Seeing molds in your vehicle’s batteries is similar to keeping stale bread in your family fridge-it must be thrown and replaced. The battery casing should also be crack-free. If you find any, do not attempt to ramp up your automobile; the batteries are beyond saving and you would just have to call up any of the Portland auto repair shops to get another one.

You will have more chances of jump starting your auto’s battery if not one of the above-mentioned scenarios are present. At this point, keep in mind that the batteries have positive and negative terminals. Familiarize its location simply because jump cables are linked to specific charges. So the positive charge should be connected to another positive charge and the negative charge should be paired with the metal portion of the vehicle. The positive terminal is labeled with a plus ( ) sign. Thus, the uncovered portion of the battery will indicate the negative terminal that is corded by one black cable.

The engine ignitions of the two automobiles have to be turned off before the jump cables are attached to the batteries. Then, you must connect the jump cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery. The other end of that cable has to be clipped to the positive terminal of the ‘active’ battery. And once this has been done, take the second cable line and clip to the negative terminal of the latter. The opposite end of that cable must be then attached to the metal ground or engine block of the dead battery. Bear in mind we are not pertaining to the negative terminal of that battery. The ‘ground’ needs to be any metal surface. Bear in mind not to smoke while doing this.

The jump starting must start by activating the engine of the ‘charged’ automobile. Give it around five minutes then start the vehicle with the dead batteries. If the vehicle does not start up give it a couple of seconds just before attempting again. If the automobile still does not start, then it often never will and you may just have to ring the tow company and purchase new batteries. If it starts, then simply you are one lucky guy. While trying to keep both cars running, remove the jump cables in reverse order. You should focus on the grounded metal and after that the negative terminal. Next you can now get rid of the cables tied to the positive terminal of the ‘charged’ automobile then on to the positive terminal of the ‘drained’ vehicle.

Make sure that you appreciate the individual who assisted you in jump starting your automobile. Social graces would dictate that you invite the person for coffee to return the favor. He will most likely decline the offer yet it would definitely be valued.
