The Do and Don’t of Car Rentals

When choosing a rental car it is important that you research all available options, and shop around for the best price, just as you would do for any other purchase you are considering. While this process may take some time, it is often worth it if you end up with the type of car you are looking for, in the timeframe you are looking for, at a cheaper rate.

Here are some tips that can help you find the best rate on a rental car. Use them the nest time you are shopping around for a rental and you are sure to find a great deal and save a large sum of money.

DON’T RENT FROM THE AIRPORT. Airport vehicle rental prices tend to be more expensive. Many times they have extra fees included and since airport rentals tend to be the most convenient, the companies know that they can charge you a little more and get away with it. After all, if you are coming off a flight, it is just more convenient to be able to rent right at the airport. A wiser choice might be to take a shuttle to your hotel and then rent a vehicle from a local rental agent. Doing this can not only save you money off the rate itself, but may also cut down by a day or two that you will need the rental for, potentially saving you more money.

ALWAYS RENT A COMPACT CAR. Most people, especially in North America don’t like to drive compact cars, and since the rental companies know this they tend to keep only a few such vehicles on hand. If you arrive to pick up your vehicle and you have reserved a compact car, then the company must offer you an upgraded vehicle at no extra charge and this can save you quite a bit off your rental. Don’t worry, because if you get there and they do have a compact available and you don’t want it you can always pay the upgrade fee to get the larger vehicle anyway.

DON’T GET THE INSURANCE. Many companies will offer you to pay per day for their additional insurance, boasting that it will cover you for everything. If you are already covered by your own insurance policy and you are paying for your rental with a credit card, then the additional insurance is truly an unnecessary expense and one that you can easily forgo.
