What Can I Do To Improve Gas Mileage And Save Fuel

By Pete Roberts

Ways to improve gas mileage and save gas or money are not that difficult to find. Combine trips or errands to places you usually have to travel to daily or weekly. Think of this as trip planning and try to find the shortest routs possible by using online mapping services or GPS. A GPS device can save you money and some services will show you routes that are the most direct further saving gas and money.

Use services online that help you search for the lowest gas prices in your area or routes you travel. Take advantage of the services to help you find the lowest gas prices available. When you are planning trips include the lowest price gas stops at the pump into your trip.

The best way to shop is to search for your products online to find the lowest prices. Many major retailers offer discounts or lower prices online with a larger product selection including free shipping. This can save you money not only on the purchase but you could save fuel and time. Consider doing your shopping for Christmas and back to school to get you best product selections and also consider purchasing birthday gifts online to get that perfect gift.

Did you know air can improve gas mileage? Just keep your tires inflated at the proper pressure as recommended in your owners manual can give you an increase of 3%. Check your tires monthly for wear and not only will you save money at the pump but create a safer vehicle for your and your occupants. You will also save money in the long run on tires.

Get your oil change as recommended; oil that goes beyond its recommended interval can cost you in two ways. Wear and tear on an engine and when changed you could improve gas mileage 1-2%. If the service tech suggests changing an oil filter it may be a good idea. Changing an air filter that is dirty could increase gas mileage by 10%.

Keep your vehicle tuned up. If it is running rough or you have noticed a decrease in mileage it may be time for a tune up. Many things can affect your fuel cost but discovering a faulty oxygen sensor could save gas as much as 40%. A car that is properly tuned up will burn less gas, run smoother and extend the life of your engine.

While driving always give your vehicle some distance from the one your following. Let your vehicle coast to a natural stop while minimizing brake use. Let wind resistance reduce your speed. When accelerating no need to gun it. Set your cruise control to improve gas mileage. Not only will these methods save gas but will save you money by reducing wear and tear on your engine, brakes and transmission.

Will you be purchasing a more fuel efficient vehicle soon because you want to get rid of a gas guzzler or just looking for ways to improve gas mileage? Compare miles per gallon or MPG. Be wary of a vehicle that needs premium gas compared to one that needs regular. If an automobile manufacturer recommends premium chances are the vehicle needs it and running it on regular could reduce engine life. Try to stick to regular or ethanol ready engines. Always research the vehicle you plan on buying.
