Why Goods-In-Transit Insurance Is A Good Idea
As a courier I am only too aware of the importance of looking after other peoples positions and therefore was very keen to make sure that I had the right insurance cover in place. I knew that if I just looked for the cheapest insurance deal, I might find that I am not fully covered. This is a story that could have ended horribly wrong but fortunately, my careful nature paid dividends.
When I started my new business I began by ensuring that I had my company covered which included employer’s liability, professional indemnity, goods in transit and my two vans. I took out a courier insurance policy including all the important insurances and goods in transit. Unfortunately, I didn’t quite qualify for a mini-fleet and so couldn’t take advantage of cost the savings by combining my insurance policies and taking out a fleet policy.
While speaking to my local insurance broker (who has always arranged my insurance for me) I was advised to take out a fully comprehensive commercial vehicle policy to cover the two company vans, which included breakdown cover. The broker explained that the breakdown cover was comprehensive, and could cater for Roadside Recovery, Home Start or Full European Cover, and meant I didn’t have to go to a specific recovery company such as the AA or RAC. I decided to take out this cover.
A couple of months later, we had one of the worst snow falls I have seen in a long time. The towns near where I lived and worked in Northumberland were virtually cut off from the rest of the country. The news reporters were advising that we didn’t go out unless we had too. I had several package to deliver around the area and couldn’t let my clients down.
Therefore, I prepared myself for the cold, and started up the van in the freezing cold. The windows had already started to re-freeze after I scraped them this morning, and I could barely see where I was going. Approaching the last delivery of the day and I was amazed I hadn’t had an accident, when a warning light came on my dashboard, and when it was safe I pulled over. I couldn’t get the engine restarted after it cut out and although I was lucky it was the end of the day, and of my deliveries, I still had to worry about tomorrows. Within 20 minutes of calling the number the broker gave me the recovery truck was with me, and towed me to the local garage where they identified and fixed my van.
I managed to deliver all my packages for the next day, meaning that there was hardly any disruption to my business, making me very pleased I took out the cover. Through listening to my insurance broker I learned the benefits of not just going for the cheapest deal, but being properly covered in the event of an emergency, a promise for a business which is invaluable.

I decided to take the cover out which, at least meant I didn’t need to go and sort out breakdown cover elsewhere.
