Breaking In New Dr Martens

By Justina Gray

Some people find Dr Martens easy to break in, others with sensitive feet find that they get terrible blisters. The main problem is that the leather that Dr Martens use is of such a high quality it is much thicker than normal leather.

There are many urban legends about the best way to break in a pair of DMs. These legends range from the funny to the those you would not try even if paid a large sum of money.

The tried and tested method is to cover your feet in Vaseline then put on a thick pair of socks over the top. With your boots still on get in the shower and turn it on, so that the boots become soaked through. You then need to wear them either until they dry our or for as long as you can stand. Most army recruits do it this way.

If you think getting into a shower with your DMs on is a bit extreme, get them damp by wrapping them in wet towels. Leave them for at least 30 minutes then put them on. Whatever method you settle on, it is important to keep your boots on for as long as possible. Some people believe that you have to leave them on for 48hrs straight, even in bed! Break your DMs in on a day(s) when you do not have to be on your feet a lot or walk far or your feet will get sore or blistered.

The final method is a bit time consuming, but many people prefer doing it this way. First rub as much Wonder Balm, which comes with your new boots, in to them. Concentrate on the seams and the heel. Wrap the boots in a towel and pummel them with a rubber hammer. Rub in more balm and repeat. Unwrap the boots and flex them with your hands, twisting them in different directions. Wear them the next day for a few hours, then the following day for an hour more. Carry on like that until you are able to wear them all day.
