Contemporary Styles In Silver Jewellery

By Mark Ferguson

Silver has always been valued in jewellery making for its color, shine, affordability, and durability. Silver lasts for a long time and makes a good investment. Silver is also very malleable which gives the designers and jewellery artisans more freedom when creating their pieces. Although silver jewellery models tend to be classic, there are always new trends each year where some styles are more popular than others.

One of the most popular trends in jewellery this year is handmade jewellery. People begin to buy handmade items because they are unique and are more personal. Silver is a common base material to make handmade jewellery for its affordability and quality. Silver is also very easy to work with, especially for independent artisans. Popular new techniques for handmade jewellery are stamping, metal clay, and wire work or wire wrapped.

Wire work jewellery is made from wire, such as silver wire, which is shaped into many different forms and styles to make earrings, pendants, bracelets, and necklaces. Wire work jewellery is usually made with additional beads to enhance the designs. Most common beads that are used are beads that are made from semi precious stones, silver beads, handmade lampwork beads, crystal beads, Czech beads, and freshwater pearls.

Buyers always love to have personalized item with their names or favorite words on their jewellery. Stamping technique is a perfect way to achieve this easily. Like with wire work designs, artisans also use semi precious stones, beads, or freshwater pearls along with their stamped charms in the jewellery.

The newest invention, metal clay, allows artisans to shape jewellery from metal that is as soft and pliable as ordinary clay but with much higher value. Many great designs stem from this material, which make metal clay jewellery becoming more popular.

Aside from handmade jewellery, whimsical designs are also popular. Most of these designs feature birds or natural inspired items such as leaves and twigs. Some designs use organic materials which have been cast in silver. Whimsical pieces are simple and delicate, which make them look feminine and young.

Although silver is valued for its bright color, some people prefer to have antique and blackened silver pieces. Silver jewellery is processed with some chemicals which resulted in oxidized silver. Oxidized silver is currently popular along the trend of vintage look in fashion industry. With oxidized silver, people do not need to concern themselves with the possibility of tarnish, which make caring for the jewellery easier.
