Converse All Star Ox Shoes Are Lower Cut Versions Of The Iconic High Tops
By Keith Cason
Hi-top Converse All Stars are quite popular. Originally designed for men’s basketball they have become an athletic inspired casual shoe. While the players generally preferred above the ankle models, Converse All Star Ox, for oxfords, offer a different fit and feel. They are cut lower looking more like a traditional shoe.
The hi-top basketball shoe has been around for almost a century. Marquis Converse started the Converse Rubber Shoe Company in 1908 to manufacture rubber boots and shoes for wet weather conditions. They began making tennis shoes in 1915 and created the first All Star in 1917.
Chuck Taylor joined Converse in 1921. He was a well-known and accomplished player of his era. He redesigned the original models that look much like the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Ox, or “Chucks” that we see today. What he created has become one of the most popular and best selling shoe brands of all time.
The new design included heavy canvas that came above the ankle. The canvas helped to protect the athletes’ ankles from strains and sprains. The patch which now has the logo and his signature, was intended to add additional protection for the bones that protrude from the ankle. The heavy rubber in the soles, in addition to creating the squeak on the wooden floors, helped with traction and grip and added cushioning for their feet.
In the 1960s the Converse All Star Ox lower cut models were introduced. Already having gained popularity in the mainstream with the hi-tops, the more traditional looking oxfords added new fans. The look of the hi-top models portrayed somewhat of a rebellious attitude to the older generations. The more traditional look of the lower cut versions were more tolerated by parents and older people.
Models where leather replaced canvas in the upper part of the shoe were introduced in the 1970s. Leather gives everything that it is made into a distinct look and feel and All Stars are no different. Boots and shoes, including oxfords, are available in a number of styles for men, women and children.
For women and girls the Converse All Star light line is designed exclusively for the ladies. Before the series was created women had to order smaller sizes of the men’s shoe. This newer line lighter in weight and narrower for a better fit and a more feminine look. Besides oxfords, hi-tops, boots and slip-on versions are in the line.
For a different feel and fit oxford models are an option. Oftentimes a high top shoe takes some getting used to since they restrict movement of the ankle. Converse All Star Ox shoes retain the classic silhouette and the trademark toecap. They are comfortable and stylish enough to match with your favorite outfits for everyday wear or those times when you want a more casual type of footwear.
