Ears 101

By Abel Alexander

The ear is a low maintenance body part but it is also very sensitive. It does not require a lot of things from you. In fact, it can take care of itself. It is precisely because of this that it can also be easily damaged when you do things unnecessarily to it. Below are some tips you can use in caring for the ear.

Cleaning The Ear
Be gentle when you are cleaning your ear. For the outer part, you can use a damp cloth or tissue. The old adage of not putting anything in your ear smaller than an elbow is actually true. Don’t use cotton swab because it only pushes the earwax further into the ear. That will eventually get stuck there and may cause infection. Earwax will get itself out. Leave it alone.

When you are flying in an airplane, yawn and swallow frequently especially if the plane is ascending. This will keep the balance of the pressure in your ears. The equivalent must also be done when you are diving. There are proper breathing techniques to avoid putting too much pressure on your ear.

Don’t turn the volume up of your stereo or home theater system too loud. Actually, the normal speaking voice is the right kind of volume for our ear. Anything louder than that damages the ear eventually. Don’t let yourself be exposed to that. Even rock stars wear ear caps when they go on stage.

Headphones are especially bad because the sound source is nearer to your ear. Don’t turn the volume up to its maximum and don’t let it on too long. Your ear needs some rest. Road noise is also very damaging to the ear, wear earplugs if you know the place you are going to will be noisy.

Extra care must be taken if you are already starting to lose your hearing. It might be time for you to wear hearing aids. Go to a physician and you can always check the internet for hearing aids comparison.
