Golden Beads: Why You Will Never See Mr. T Wearing Bead Bracelets
By Jim Vacey
Bead bracelets are not “strong guy” jewelry. Beads are designed to be a kid’s type of jewelry or a Jamaican adornment. Tough guys tend to wear a tremendous amount of gold or silver around their necks and wrists. Look at Rappers. Rappers even have gold in their jaw line.
What is the real want for beads? Bead bracelets tend to be made of wood or plastic. No self-respecting person will wear beads around their neck unless it is for a party or because their kid put bead bracelets around their arms. Beads are a play thing nothing like gold. You can’t put beads in your teeth.
Would Mr. T look as bad-ass if he wore bead bracelets as opposed to gold chains? Would he pity the fool that didn’t wear beads? Mr. T is a pretty tough guy and either way, I would not want to mess with a juiced up Mohawk with beads wrapped around his neck. Mr. T would not be wearing beads around his neck and most certainly would not encourage bead bracelets in his Mohawk.
What about Italian Mafia guys? Would they be as rough as they are if they wore bead bracelets? What if a mobster approached you and told you to go see the godfather? Would you take that guy sincerely if he were wearing bead bracelets or had beads in his hair? I know I wouldn’t. I certainly would not return his calls either.
Beads are for Mardi gras and block parties. There is little cause that tough guys would be wearing bead bracelets to express their manliness. Beads are fun in a certain amount. An over profusion of beads would drive any one batty. I think that if there were bead bracelets marketed towards the “harsh guy” the marketing campaign would flop completely. Unless beads were made of gold that is.
