Myth: Minor surgery will cure my hearing problem. I know someone who suffered hearing loss and after some medication and surgery, his hearing is as good as new.
Truth: Yes it is true that for people who have difficulty hearing, people will seem to not speak loud enough but that is because the ear is not on its tip top shape to absorb sound but making people speak louder or turning the volume higher will only damage the ear further. One of the most common forms of ear abuse is listening to music too loud or allowing yourself to be exposed to excessive noise for long periods of time. Wear earplugs when you know you will get to a place that is very noisy.
Myth: Hearing aids are too expensive and they break easily. I don’t have the money to buy one and it is not a priority.
Truth: Medicine and technology have advanced tremendously and the number one beneficiaries are the consumers. You get to have many choices in terms of quality and price ranges. The best ones are not anymore expensive. There are so many brands out there and all you have to do is a research for the one that fits your needs and you budget. It should be a priority. Save for it, if needed because hearing is a huge part in your participation to the society. The better you hear, the better your part will be.
Myth: Hearing tests are expensive and inconvenient. I can just go and buy myself a hearing aid. That is what the doctor will tell me anyway.
Truth: Everyone is advised to wear an ear plug when they know they will get exposed to extreme noise that is not limited to a concert. Even the busy street is excessive.
