A Guide On Shearling Coats

By Kyle Hirsch

Everyone who enjoys fashion loves a nice coat or jacket. They’re one of the more popular items in the fashion world, since we get to wear them on a regular basis. Fur jackets are one of the most desirable types of jackets.

The most popular type of fur jacket these days is shearling. This has changed with styles over the years, but the amount of production for shearlings has been on the rise. With that said, there are all sorts of different quality to choose from as well. The better the material, the longer it will last. The quality is often determined how it’s made and where it came from.

The quality of shearling varies depending on what part of the world it’s produced in. Some of the features of high quality shearling include its durability, softness and how light the material is. A quality shearling coat can be used during extreme cold or on more of a mild day.

Spain is known to produce some of the best sheepskin products in the world. What separates their sheepskin from many other countries is the way the material feels; it’s supple. Argentina is also known for high end products.

Another quality found in high end shearling is its flexibility. The more flexible the shearling, the better it is. Spain and Argentina produce flexible and light weight shearlings. The other countries producing shearling, like Australia and England typically produce lower end shearling, mainly because they’re heavier products.

The heavy sheepskin produced from these countries makes it very hard to use in shearling coats. Uruguay is known for heavy coats as well, but they’re made extremely high-end and are great in extreme weather.

Keep your eyes open for faux shearling coats. These have become more popular as the demand for authentic shearlings is on the rise. There’s obviously a huge gap in price between an authentic high end shearling and a faux jacket.

A quality shearling jacket will can cost above $1,000. Before you make a large investment on a high end coat, find out where the pelts are coming from. This way you know what you’re getting and hopefully it will last you many years!
