Taking Care Of A Gold Plated Jewelry

By Jensen Carlyle

It is nice to have a touch of gold on your whole appearance especially if you are trying to look more elegant and polished. Solid gold jewelry can give the elegance and the right amount of shine that you need but unfortunately, the pure ones is a very costly accessory. A good substitute for this is a gold-plated jewelry which is made up with a base metal being covered by a very thin layer of gold. In time, the gold that is covering the jewelry will wear off and its life span would depend on how you use and take care of it. In order to preserve your gold-plated jewelry, you would need to follow a certain care therapy so that you can use it for more occasions in the future.

Avoid Items from Fading

Scratches, dirt and oxygen are the top reasons why the gold in gold-plated jewelry is fading away. In order to protect your jewelry, you would need to take some steps to avoid the above given elements that could destroy it slowly but surely. Secure your jewelry in a box lined with velvet or a soft cloth to prevent it from being scratched. Avoid wearing the gold-plated jewelry while working as this is a good opportunity for bumps and scratches to remove the gold layer faster.

Wipe the jewelry lightly of damp cloth if you see dust and dirt accumulating on its surface. You can also make use of cotton to clean the layer. Aside from a jewelry box, you can store the gold-plated accessory in a dry and seal-able plastic. Make sure that you have squeezed it enough to remove the excess air as this will result to tarnishing.

Cleaning and Buffing

Since dirt and dust can cause tarnishing on gold-plated jewelry, it is important to clean those whenever you see that dirt has piled up on the surfaces affecting its shine. Prepare a tooth brush and a gentle dishwashing liquid or hand soap. Gently brush the surface, engraved parts and edges to remove the dirt. Once done, dry the gold-plated accessory with a paper towel. You can also leave it to dry on its own to remove the moisture.

Buff the surface of your gold-plated accessory with a jeweler’s cloth. This will restore the luster to the surface which makes it look like a brand new item. Jeweler’s cloth is being used to bring the shine back on silver but this can also be effective on gold-plated items. You can make use of a gold plating kit of cleaning and buffing did not give you the result that you want. You can also take it to a local jeweler to replace the gold layer but you would need to pay a charge for their service.
