Understanding The Use Of Islamic Turban

By Cathy Mercer

Some religions have their own way of dressing. In this regard, their followers are influenced to obey and make use of that dressing. It can be on a part or entire body. In other scenarios, it is not just the religion but their culture and traditions. The Muslim faithful have been using the Islamic turban as a mode of their dressing for men.

It is a piece of garment, quite lengthy and lean in size whose essential users are men for covering their heads. Since time in memorial, the use of this garment has always existed. Its establishment came with their prophet. Variations exist especially on the materials used to make it. These are wool, nylon, cotton and polyester. Regardless of this variation, the garments serve the same purpose of covering the head.

In color, they appear in variety. Some are black, others white, yellow, grey, blue and many others. Each of these colors has their own meaning and perception when one uses a turban of a certain color. In this regard, preference is wholly a matter of choice to make as long as one has knowledge about that given color he has put on.

Size on the other hand has been debatable although the holy book does denote the actual size which should be used. These are found in a chapter of the prophetic book. It denotes two measures as the typical length; between seven to ten yards. Any measure between these two is suitable for wearing. This size has been a subject of debate because nowadays, even short ones are allowed especially when they cover heads with at least one winding.

When covering, it takes a skill for perfection to be achieved. This has been a challenge for those beginners. As time goes by and with sufficient practice, it becomes simpler to do it. This process should ensure total covering of the crown. When tying, it should not be done so tight since it may result into headaches.

As per all these, the uses of this cloth are quite a number. When a man wears this, it pictures him as someone with high sense of respect and manhood. This shows that he is a strong believer in their faith and has a high feeling of total devotion into it. All these can be quoted from their holy book.

Praying also is a must for one to be putting it on. Doing so with a bare head is a sign of laziness and abomination to their religion. This view used to be practical during the olden days. Of late, it is allowed especially when one has humbled before their god as a show of humility. Present-day Muslims do not wear it during prayers.

The use of Islamic turban also creates a clear dissimilarity between Muslims and non Muslims brothers within the society. It is their way of identification. In this regard, they find it easy to spot those of their religion, socialize and strengthen ties with them. The underlying belief being it is of great return.
