Why you should be careful about cheap sunglasses
By Kay Bornham
Inexpensive sun shades are everywhere. They're a popular free present from firms that need to appear popular, and they're on sale at each shop anywhere by a beach, as well as anyplace else that folks regularly go in summer (theme parks, as an example). But you should be very , very wary of inexpensive shades, because even though it feels like they're helping to keep the sun out of your eyes, they can basically do more damage than benefit.
The problem is that inexpensive sun shades don’t defend against ultraviolet rays, the rays that can cause issues like eye cancer and cataracts. Instead , they fool your eyes into thinking that it’s dark when it’s really not, which causes the pupils of your eyes to widen, letting in much more UV rays than they usually would.
This immensely increases the amount of damage that the sun can do to your eyes. While you might be happy to use them to keep the sun from blinding you, if you do it regularly you may be significantly damaging your well-being. If you've got a pair of cheap sun shades – or you're given one for free – the nicest thing to do, all things considered, is to throw them in the bin.
Of course, the exact opposite of inexpensive sunglasses isn't inevitably expensive ones. The shades you would like are ones that offer 100% protection against UV rays, but these can basically be very reasonably priced – and as long as you keep track of where you put them at the end of the summer, they can last you for years to come, which makes them even more value.
You should look for some kind of official validation that the shades have passed tests both for UVA and UVB screening, and only buy from a shop that you trust, preferably a longtime chemist.
