Many Doctors Believe A Dental X Ray Probably Outweighs Any Risks
For years, dentists have used a dental x ray to help them in diagnosing the health of a person’s teeth and gums. Each year, a new film, has been taken so that any changes in a person’s oral health may be detected that may not be noticed by just looking. Many times, there may be decay beneath an existing filling, or between the teeth that could potentially become a bigger problem if left untreated.
Having the ability to locate any decay or abscess early may reduce the risk of bigger problems later. Scheduling routine radiograph examinations along with annual check-ups may also aid in the discovery of cysts or tumors in the gums. Periodontal disease may also be found early so that it can be treated.
If a person has a history of oral disease, a dentist may request that radiographs be taken more often than annually. Many dentists also prefer that children get these pictures taken more often, as well. This is primarily because a child’s jaws and teeth grow at a faster pace, and it helps to keep track of any changes in them.
While patients may be exposed to some radiation from the radiography, it is much less than the exposure from other forms of imagery. Some studies do suggest that patients exposed frequently, do increase their risks of contracting thyroid cancer. The research shows, using leaded aprons and collars during exposure can reduce this.
This news has prompted many pregnant women to refuse any type of radiographs be taken during their pregnancy. Unfortunately, there may be times when it is necessary. An untreated oral infection may also prove to be dangerous to the fetus, as well as, the mother.
The advantageous to having a dental x ray appear to be more numerous than the risks to having them taken. Having the ability to see well below the surface of the gum can help dentists treat problems before they surface. The majority of dentists are familiar with the risks and work hard to ensure there is little exposure to the patients. Dental x ray
