A Good Accountant Can Improve Your Business

By Julia Markham

A good accountant can really bring extra benefits to your business, they should not be viewed just as someone to do the books. A good relationship with your accountant is vital to your business. They must be approachable and able to provide you with information in an understandable format to time-scales that suit your business needs.

Your accountant will over time get to know your business and the market that you are working in, so like any member of your team will better understand the needs of the business and be able to respond to them.If you can find an accountant that has previously worked with similar businesses this will happen much more quickly. It is not uncommon for accountants over time to contribute ideas and innovations that can grow your business considerably. A good accountant will be able to advice you on how to successfully borrow the funds that you need to take advantage of such opportunities.

Your accountant will help you to develop reports and tools to show you how your business is progressing both in the short term and the long term. This kind of information will help you to decide for example if the rise in raw material costs means you have to raise your prices immediately or whether you can safely absorb the rise and for how long.

Things like payroll, maintaining records for VAT or your tax return can take up a great deal of time and resources, meaning the business cannot find the time to concentrate on doing things that help them to grow. Your accountant can help to prevent this from happening by providing people to take care of these things for you.

Your relationship with your accountant is vital to the growth of your business, you need to understand each other clearly in order for the relationship to work. Look for someone who is flexible and can adapt to the needs of your business as you grow.

Do not be tempted to scrimp on the cost of an accountant, with accountants you really do get what you pay for. A cheap accountant who 6 months later has not done your accounts correctly will, in the long term, cost your business a lot of time and money. When you hire a new accountant to start with keep a close eye on the work that they do for you, so you can build a strong working relationship quickly.
