Statistics Update Reveals That More Than One Million Web Sites Are Using Facebook’s Platform

By Queenie Ang

Facebook recently updated its official company Statistics page with some new data points about how people are using the service. The single biggest update is that the company now says that more than one million web sites have integrated with its developer platform, whether via its new social plugins or other features. Facebook has also removed or re-described some information that it used to share. Here’s a quick look at all of the changes.

The official statistic page is pretty organized. At the top you will find a section called “People on Facebook” reporting the old news in February that over 400 million people login Facebook every month while 50% of them do so every day. Other trivia include: Facebook users have 130 friends on average. And they spend over 500 billion minutes every month. So you see, Facebook is really a time sucker.

Facebook has also moved detailed stats on features like status updates, photos, events and Pages to the next section, “Activity on Facebook.” And while it previously listed out details on specific features like status updates, events, photos and Pages – see our February writeup for more on that – it has now grouped them together. The company says there are more than 160 million “objects” that people interact with; objects are defined as Pages, groups and events.

A new term “pieces of content is invented by Facebook. The term refers to content such as links, photos, videos, notes, status updates and any other content posted on Facebook. Data shows that users are connected to 60 “objects” and create 70 “pieces of content” each month on average.

There are as many as 25 billion “pieces of content” being shared on Facebook per month. Comparing the data with another one which was released in February, that 5 billion “pieces of content” were created per week, the number has bounced by a stunning 20 billion, if “created” and “shared” stand for the same idea. The soar is predictable, if one are aware of how Facebook is recruiting millions of people to its site every month.

“Global Reach” is a neglectful section, since there is no data update, besides the renaming of it from “International Growth”. Following is the Platform section, where some new exciting figures can be found. The first announcement is the increase in active applications number, from 500,000 to 550,000. Not exactly shocking, if you ask me.

Up next is a magnificent accomplishment, that the number of web sites joined Facebook Connect has jumped from 80,000 to 1 million. The introduction of Like Box and plugins in late April are some core contributors. Earlier this week Facebook announced that over 300,000 web sites have made use of plugins, and the trend is seemingly unstoppable. Not only nameless bloggers, but big companies such as CNN and other publications operated on the Internet are using the plugins service.

And that’s not all. While Facebook previously said that more than 60 million people “engage with Facebook Connect” on other sites, it now says that the number is up to 150 million. Note that we’re assuming, based on Facebook’s phrasing, that this means actually using Facebook on other sites rather than just happening to load sites that have the Like Box. The reason for this qualification is that widget companies are notorious for purposefully conflating these sorts of numbers.
