The secret to successful online advertising is to understand which form of promotion is most beneficial to you. Basically, a variety of methods can be used to promote a product or service via the Internet. The marketing campaigns come in various forms such as contextual, banner, and network advertisements. Social media and email marketing are two other popular methods.

Online advertising has many advantages over traditional promotional techniques. For example, it allows the advertiser to reach a global audience without geographical limitations and time zones. Innovations such as interactive advertising also offer new opportunities to engage potential customers, and advertisements can be placed on relevant web pages or alongside relevant search results defined by keywords.

Advertisements can be purchased in several ways. The most popular forms are pay or cost per click, which means charges are only incurred when the customer completes a purchase or signs up, cost per view which involves the use of pop up adverts and charges are incurred per unique user view, and cost per mile which incurs charges per advertisement loaded or per impression.

Online advertisements are available in several different forms. Floating adverts float or move over a web page, while pop up ads open another window. Expanding ads change the web page content or even change the size, and video ads use animated or video material for promotional purposes. A wallpaper advertisement changes the background of the web page and an interstitial advert is a full page ad that appears before a user accesses the page they originally intended to open.

Email advertising provides another method of reaching consumers. People can opt in or sign up to an ongoing campaign, which allows them to receive information about a company, service or product on a regular basis. Unsolicited emails are known as spam and can have a negative effect on a promotional campaign, since they are considered an annoyance.

Affiliate advertising offers advertisers the opportunity to purchase space with publishers and place campaigns where they will only be charged per sale, sign up or enquiry. These are usually provided by affiliate networks and are designed to generate low cost exposure for the advertiser.

Online advertising has increased in popularity thanks to its many benefits. Advertisers can now cross geographical boundaries, cultures and languages for much less than traditional campaigns cost. Using the right methods allows a targeted audience to be reached with maximum exposure, which could potentially increase turnover with minimal expense on advertisements.
