Blogging Guide: Make Money Blogging

By Angela Booth

If you’re looking for a simple online business you can start completely for free, look no further than “money blogging.” If you understand that while a blog is no get-rich-quick scheme, it is however a great way of making an income online, you’ll succeed.

I’ve been blogging for a decade; long before blogs were fashionable. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot. I’ve watched many people fail at blogging, simply because they didn’t have a plan. In this article, I’ll give you a short and easy four-step plan you can use.

1. What’s your topic? It’s wise to choose to blog about something you know well, and are passionate about. Here’s a big, important tip: ensure that money is being spent in the subject area you choose for your blog.

As a rule of thumb, if there is advertising in a niche, then money is being spent. To find out whether people are advertising on your topic, visit Google and type the topic name into the search query box. Are there advertisers on the right hand side of the query results page?

2. Decide what you’ll sell on your blog. Once you’ve discovered that people are spending money in your niche it’s time to find out what others are selling. Check out the other blogs in the niche, and look at their advertising carefully. It’s usually fairly easy to see how other bloggers are making money, and if they’re making money, so can you.

If you’ve decided on a very competitive topic, that’s fine. Topics are competitive because people are making money. These days, it’s impossible to find profitable topics in which there’s no competition.

3. Realize that you need content. You’ll need to blog consistently in your blog’s first weeks, until you’ve established it as a destination, and have won some regular readers and subscribers. Your posts attract traffic via the magic of RSS — your posts will be syndicated across the web.

4. Get the best traffic. The best traffic is traffic which converts (makes sales). Not all your traffic will convert, and you’ll need to do considerable exploration of your website referrer logs to find out where the good traffic is coming from. Experiment, and test: no matter how wonderful (or miserable) your conversions are, you can always improve them.

Get started creating your blog money machine. You’ll earn as you learn. Keep these tips in mind: choose a niche with spenders, choose what you’ll sell, create content and promote, and pay attention to the quality of your traffic.
