While you may experience the misery of hot flashes, mood swings, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia as you enter menopause, one thing you can’t blame on menopause is memory loss.

The latest researches on the relationship between menopause and memory loss were conducted on hundreds of women divided in two groups: perimenopausal and menopausal. The results showed that there was no difference. Both groups scored as well on different cognitive function tests.

If you are entering menopause, you don’t need to worry about losing your memory. Memory loss during menopause is a myth started by women who felt that going through menopause reduced their mind sharpness. This is their perception and it is not true.

When it comes to menopause, the most researched treatment is hormone replacement therapy. Lots of researches are being conducted, and lots of contradicting results are generated. A good example is that a recent research showed that hormone replacement therapy protects against the dementia. This research proves that memory loss is caused by hormonal imbalance at menopause. However, some other researchers showed that au contrary, hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of dementia. So what is the truth?

The truth is that menopause symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, insomnia, and hot flashes might temporarily affect your cognitive skills. That doesn’t mean that you will develop memory loss because you are going through menopause. Be honest with you, how many times did you notice that you can’t concentrate after a night of tossing around, even if you are not menopausal? Those hot flashes at menopause produce insomnia and that causes short term memory loss or inability to concentrate.

As a final thought, I urge menopausal women to stop blaming menopause for their short or long term memory loss. Memory loss is not caused by the imbalance of estrogen and progesterone at menopause, therefore any hormone replacement therapy will not improve your cognitive skills.
