Oneida Flatware is considered one of the world’s biggest flatware producers with its offering of a large variety of different table accessories to marketing segments around the world. Among their specialties are flatware, crystal, china and glassware. The company was founded in 1848 in New York and originally began as a Perfectionism based community of members.
This community shared all of their property and children were raised by everyone as a group. This gave many of the adults more free time to spend working on the creation of things such as chains, knives, forks, spoons and even animal traps.
Through the production of all of these items they gained a reputation for making high quality merchandise and it enabled them to remain in the communal setting much longer than other groups during the same time. This was largely due to the fact that they were more financial secure than most other groups and because they did not have a need for money they remained close in their beliefs.
In the 1870′s a disagreement about the interpretation of the doctrine they followed succeeded in separating the group. Oneida was divided in half and from there established itself as a joint stock company ran by a few of the members that were still left. Some of the other members chose to help by working for the company outside of the community in various positions and others chose to leave completely and move on.
For a period of around fifteen years or so after this separation of the group the company slowly declined and with the hurdle of a depression in the 1890′s the company almost went under financially. This wasn’t due to a lack of quality of course but rather a lack of demand due to the economical situation.
In 1984 Pierrepont Noyes returned to the company after spending several years as a wholesaler outside of the group. The knowledge and experience he acquired during his time as a wholesaler proved very useful for recovering the company from its struggle. There was a brief time where some of the members were not fully on board, but soon they all united under Noyes for the good of the company after they saw the positive impact that he brought to the table.
By the time he was thirty years old he was in full control of Oneida. From there he focused on marketing and brand recognition as well as increased promotion efforts for the companies products. From then on they have experienced a steady increase in growth and worked on mastering the art of their manufacturing processes for all products that they offer.
Fast forward to today and they have grown into a leader in their industry and continue to provide quality flatware to the world. They take great interest in every person involved in the company and remain close nit as they continue to grow more and more. This dedication to quality as well as community is the key factor behind their great success.
