Take time to think: SendOutCards which please the recipient. In a world where everyone expects their message to reach the ends of the earth in an instant, the idea of slowing down for a moment may appear counter-productive. And yet, there is something just a little bit ‘special’ about receiving a genuine, solid, three-dimensional envelope: ideally addressed by hand, and containing an actual, hand-written missive.
Every conceivable event appears to be covered in the range of greetings cards available commercially, relating to special days from the first days of our lives to those expressing sympathy and condolences when a loved one dies. The dimensions of the finished article are arbitrary but each one tends to be a piece of stiffened paper folded once to give four pages. This makes it possible to display the card by standing it on a single edge in order to enjoy looking at the artwork and greetings.
Customising a greeting (as opposed to buying a mass produced item) and tailoring the card specifically to honour one particular person is something guaranteed to please the donor as much as it does the receiver.
Computer systems have been developed in recent years which are easy to use and open up opportunities for anyone with some elementary equipment to put together an original and unique greetings card which the person to whom it is sent will recognise as having been produced by the sender and printed as a single unit for them, and for them alone. At the same time, this special niche in the market has encouraged the proliferation of a number of companies offering to produce this type of card for those who lack the tools (or the self confidence) to attempt the task.
Someone who cares enough to spend time and thought constructing such a greeting card from scratch is just as likely to make a good impression as the man who wore a bespoke suit rather than an ‘off the peg’ version such as the lesser quality clothing which was all the servicemen returning from the War could find in the shops of ration book Britain in 1945.
Is it possible to devise a plan to guarantee the ideal format of a greetings card, which has a chance of granting equal amounts of pleasure to the thoughtful giver and the grateful receiver? Let’s begin by investigating the standard elements of any greetings card.
Three of the four pages of a typical greetings card will display a mixture of text and art work. The final page is often left blank, but may have an ISBN bar printed on it, or discreet details of the publishing house in a minute, unobtrusive font.
The purpose which the card is intended to serve decides the type of artwork or ornament used in the care, especially on the front cover and any verse which might be recorded on the inner pages. Where a child will enjoy humor (even somewhat coarse humor) in a birthday card, such scenes and wording would never be acceptable in a card expressing sorrow at the death of a member of the family.
The text which forms the greeting is generally the largest font used on the main (or first) page. A longer variation on the same themed greeting will often be used inside the card, usually in prose. In some of the more sentimental cards (especially expressing sympathy over a loss) verse is the preferred medium.
The philosophy behind the idea of SendOutCards which are by definition always going to be ‘one off’ creations aimed at pleasing one specific person is simple and sincere. By investing a small amount of my time and imagination to design and print a card for a special person, I am in reality demonstrating that my profession of love is not just empty words.
