The two phrases “budget conscious” and “custom cabinets” are rarely used in the same sentence. It’s definitely true that for many years custom cabinets were not affordable for those that dreamed of a custom kitchen but this is changing. The technology used to assist large cabinet manufacturers with improving efficiency and cost is now available to the local custom cabinet shop IF they have the money to invest. And one such cabinet shop has done this very thing.

This article is about small business going hi-tech in order to improve on price and maintain a custom service for their clients. I support small businesses abroad and I applause LyndenCraft for making such a step in their production process. I support entrepreneurs. More importantly those with such a unique skill set that when combined with technology can offer you some of the best products around. What used to be accomplished with manual labor, a table saw, keen eye and a steady hand is now accomplished on a 4 foot by 8 foot flat surface and robotic router. Imagine pieces being cut within 1/100th of an inch in accuracy. Accurate, safe for the employees and more importantly for you and I it costs less because less man hours are required.

Steve Oates, shop owner, told me recently, “I got a call from a women who wanted me to quote over the phone a price to compete with Home Depot. She was quoted about $6,700 just for a kitchen island with an artificial countertop. After I talked with her a bit I told her I was confident we could save her about $1,400 AND offer her a choice of 20 styles of granite included in the price.” She was shocked and I was too when he told me.

Local custom cabinet shop owner, Steve Oates, unfolded this recent example, “My phone rang last week and one struggling Mom called to obtain a verbal quote. I could tell she was anxious to obtain a quote fast so I asked a few questions. Reading from a recent quote from “Home Depo” she said, “can you beat $6,700?” In my mind I’m wondering what she asked for that drove the cost up a bit but after talking a few minutes I instantly knew the cause. She was trying to adjust a manufacturer’s standard cabinet to make it customized.” “I talked with her a few more minutes then shared that I felt we could save her about $1,400 and in addition include a granite top. I even gave her up to 20 granite types to choose from. Needless to say the client was very pleased and surprised.”

In closing Steve shared more about the custom service that they work so hard to maintain. He shared, “I mention to all my clients wanting to invest in custom cabinets. The process of preparing, designing and installing custom cabinets is just as important as enjoying the end product. Many of my clients share disappointing stories about the contractor that sold well and delivered poorly.” Steve continues, “We strive to shatter their conception of a contractor. From the moment we step foot into their home until we remove our last tool. It is our desire to develop a working relationship with our clients. We are committed to developing an enjoyable process and product that they show off and share with friends. Even more important. I trust they will use their new custom kitchen so that it becomes a focal point in their home as they create moments of community with neighbors, family and friends. That’s the true beauty created from the use of a functional and spacious kitchen.”

Local shop owner, Steve Oates, shared this story, “I received a phone call from a local resident. She was anxious to receive a fast quote over the phone for some custom cabinets. In particular, she was wanting a custom island to match her kitchen cabinets. According to the caller, Home Depo_ quoted her about $6,700 for a kitchen island including a non-granite countertop. After speaking with her I shared that I felt pretty sure we could probably save her at least $1,400. But I went one step further. I even included granite with her cabinets and she could choose up to 20 styles.” She was surprised as I was when he shared the story.

Steve continued to explain that larger manufacturers do not have the capacity to adjust cabinets for custom fits without seriously charging the clients extra because it goes outside of their normal process. Steve indicated, “All we do is customized. We’re just using the same equipment and software but our service is still customized. Recently I traveled to local Charlotte residence when taking my final measurements for an upcoming kitchen renovation project. I noticed that the cabinet above the stovetop hood wasn’t allowing a proper fit for that stovetop ventilation system. Since the homeowner wanted to reuse this hood and save money, I simply took my pencil out and made a small note to adjust the size by 1/8″ on either side. No extra cost and not trouble. That’s the custom cabinet approach. We helped them save money by reusing some equipment.

He shared more. “Big manufacturers do not have the capability to make cabinet changes to their standard widths, heights, etc. without charging the client a lot of money. It interrupts their process way too much and the client pays for this.” I asked how this was different with LyndenCraft. Steve shared, “Everything we do is customized for the client so it makes no difference to us and that’s why we could offer her a better product for less and include granite. We don’t have standard cabinet parts laying around the shop for the next job. We design, manufacture and install the cabinet they want for each and every job distinctly different. There are no up charges for custom with us. I use similar equipment and software but the big difference is our service. My customers are talking to the guy that will put the information into the computer and cut out the pieces for the Master Cabinet makers to finish and assemble.”
