Predictive Maintenance Services Can Save A Company Money

By Lela Perkins

When one acquires a piece of equipment or other device, it is with the assumption it will work and either be productive or improve the quality of life in some way. There are none that can simply be used without some schedule of maintenance or repair. The development of predictive maintenance services has made a big impact on keeping things working smoothly.

One of the biggest challenges in manufacturing is the difficulty in achieving consistent, defect-free products. The pursuit of quality in products and services has spawned an entire discipline dedicated to eliminating errors in processes, with a goal to provide quality products. The process of manufacturing, however, subjects the devices used to movement, temperature variations and extremes, and the influence of dirt and other contaminants.

The improvement in materials, from stronger, more stress resistant steel to synthetic materials substances that have greater strength, are lighter in weight and more durable have reduced the amount of care and maintenance devices require, but not eliminated it. In fact, one might argue that as materials have become better, the way operators take care of them has declined. The end result might actually be more failures.

In combination with better starting substances, the types of lubricants and cleaners have steadily improved as well. Synthetic oils protect car engines longer and better, and lubricants for everything from bicycles to rusty hinges have been tailored for specific uses. Thus there is no avoiding some semblance of vigilance in keeping things working as they were designed and manufactured to do.

The key, therefore, to near continuous equipment productivity is managing the failure sure to come. If the equipment is a convenience only for the home or family, then its loss is merely annoying, and it can be replaced or repaired at leisure. When it is a part of a business, as in the equipment needed to run a production line, a broken piece of equipment can be devastating.

But if the equipment is part of a production line, or part of a larger device, like the individual pieces that work together to make an engine, the need for continuous work takes on a new level of importance. Repairing an item of convenience costs only the price of repair. In a business setting, not only is there a cost incurred in making the repair and purchasing replacement parts, but also the cost of lost capability.

When something on the production line fails, the entire line will probably have to be stopped and productive capability is lost. If the company eschews preventive maintenance due to the costs involved and has waited until something fails of its own accord, there is also considerable time lost in troubleshooting, which adds to the delay in restarting the line. When the conditions under which production is facilitate include temperatures or pressures, the stopping and restarting can physically require an additional lengthy delay.

Ideally, every piece of equipment will be serviced and cared for so that it will function a maximum length of time, then replaced in a schedule fashion before it fails. Getting to the equipment before it breaks avoids damage to other nearby equipment and allows for repair at the most convenient time. Fortunately, a new sophisticated analytic known as predictive maintenance services makes it possible to brings this productive capability to reality.
