Arranging and organising services linked to funerals are normally taken care of by undertakers, who are also called funeral directors. To be successful in this profession the person performing these duties should have certain essential and unique skills and attributes.

By nature, undertakers should be broad minded. They should be willing to respect the traditions and beliefs of all religions and should be learned in this field. They should be conscious of different customs and rituals followed by various groups during the funeral service.
An undertaker must have good managerial and organizational skills. Making preparations for critical services like flowers, ceremonies etc will entail cooperation with many providers and will need leadership and management skills.
An undertaker should be proficient in legal matters and should know the legal formalities to be followed, or the necessary approvals needed from the State authorities before conducting funeral ceremonies. He must also be aware of the administrative procedures to be adhered to for obtaining death certificates, insurance claims etc.
Finally, an undertaker must know how to drive and should possess a valid driving license, as he may have to drive hearses and limousines.
