Green Office Furniture – A Novel Approach Towards A Greener Planet
By Oliver Harris | November 18, 2009
In this age of relentless onslaught of pollution and deteriorating forest cover on the planet, the urgency to go green is felt more than ever. The latest development in the universal go-green movement is the use of green office furniture, and this has excellent potential to make businesses eco-friendly.
A great way to sustain earth’s delicate ecology is to go for modular offices. As these offices have lesser material needs, they don’t lead to several trees being cut down . Apart from being environment friendly, it also lessens the company’s expenditure. It’s cheaper to make modular offices, and being small in size, they also mean lesser rent for the company.
Used or recycled furniture installed in offices also greatly helps in preserving the rapidly disappearing natural resources. This type of furniture normally requires only small modifications and fulfils the requirements of most offices perfectly. Because of the present economic recession, a lot of businesses are out of business and are auctioning their furniture at very low prices, which presents an excellent opportunity to save office costs. The mineral and forest resources of the earth are conserved by the use of second hand furniture, without having to make any compromises in terms of quality.
There are ways to make sure that the furniture being used is green even if it is fresh from the factory. The furniture materials must be recyclable and must have been manufactured locally so that moving them from one destination to another would not cause large emissions.
Only those foams that are CFC free must have been made use of in the furniture, as the release of these deadly chemicals cause further damage to the already thinning ozone layer. The wood for the furniture must have come from trees, which can be replanted and grown quickly, therefore reducing the damage to the forests. Finally, you must keep in mind that you should not use more furniture than you need, as being wasteful is one of the worst things that you can do to the environment.
