The Grieving Process

By Madison Baker

It is often difficult to deal with the death of a loved one. It is not possible for anything to fill the empty space left behind by a departed loved one.

The seasons continue changing even after your beloved has been laid to rest, and you discover yourself picking up the broken shards of your life. You mourn your loss – a special individual who was once an important part of your being is already gone.

Grieving can wholly take over the life of an individual who has lost a loved one. To face the sorrow caused by the demise of a loved one, you must take action. In doing this, the departed loved one’s life can be commemorated and celebrated accordingly.

Arranging a memorial for a dearly departed is one action that helps you face your own sorrow. Cultures all over the globe – even the ancient ones – have ways of honoring the dead. Commemorating the lives of those who passed away creates a sense of comfort and solace for those still of the living.

Some ways of commemorating the life of the departed loved one is the grave marker, particularly engraved with loving messages from you; art pieces or music personally written by you can add an endearing touch to your tribute; or you and those close to you could gather and just remember the life of the one who passed away, weeping and laughing as you recollect the vitality of the one who passed away.

Confronting the grief brought about by the death of a loved one is a very personal matter. Never rush yourself to “get over” the death of a beloved; you must allow yourself a period of time to consider the deep sadness that you feel. If you are artistically inclined, painting, writing poems or stories, or creating your own music during this moment could help you cope with the grief about the death of a loved one.

It is also helpful to have the care of family and friends as you go through this period where you have to clear your thoughts and feelings to be able to come to terms with the loss of a beloved.
