By Alex Cha

Death is somewhat a fearsome idea for most people. If there were no undertakers to carry through the task of preparing those who passed away for their final resting place, what would happen then? But what qualities does it take to be an undertaker? What follows are the attributes and skills essential to become a successful undertaker.

Undertakers’ or funeral directors’ job is to make preparations for funeral ceremonies and other associated needs and requirements. To be successful in this profession the person performing these tasks must possess certain important and unique skills and attributes.

An undertaker must be active and be ready to work beyond normal schedule, as he should be on call 24 hours a day. This is essentially an outdoors task, which will require him to be away from office for most of the time.

An undertaker should be an excellent communicator and a good listener. With clients hailing from so many religions, cultures and communities he should be able to communicate with and handle each one of them successfully. A sensitive and caring attitude will be of excellent help in this profession. But he will need to offer support to the bereaved family and should remain strong and emotionally detached so that he can perform his functions well.

Undertakers should be serious and dignified by nature, but must not look gloomy or morose, as this may intensify the grief of the family members of the deceased.

Knowledge of different religious beliefs, practices and sentiments, and due respect for these helps undertakers in succeeding in their profession. They should be aware of different customs and practices followed by various groups during the funeral service.

An undertaker must have good managerial and organizational skills. Many services will have to be arranged by the undertaker and this will require good coordination and managerial ability from the undertaker.

An undertaker must be smart in legal matters and should know the official procedures to be followed, or the formal approvals required from the State authorities before organizing funeral ceremonies. He will have to be fully aware of rules to be followed with respect to obtaining death certificates or insurance payments.

Lastly, an undertaker should make sure that his driver’s license is regularly updated and that he can drive the funeral vehicle during the service.
