The most important function of a retail space is to assist the buyers in purchasing the exhibited products without any problem and to allow the retailer to draw buyers to the products for effective selling. That is why retail design, which is the design of retail outlets and spaces, includes not only the standard features of architecture and interior design, but also components of ergonomics, marketing, and graphic design.

When the design for a retail space is being developed, the designer should make it according to the particular purposes of that retail space. For example, an art emporium would need a completely different design and arrangement from that of a supermarket. When the design is developed, numerous aspects have to be taken into account, like the type of goods on sale, the role played by the sales men in the selling of the items and the quantity of the goods that have to be put on display. Also, in several retail areas, goods just need to be exhibited, while in others, the customers would also prefer to test the goods in the store. The retail design adopted would hence differ accordingly.

Apart from the utilitarian features of retail design, the attractiveness of the retail area to the consumer is also extremely important. It is critical that customers feel welcome in the shop once they enter, and are prompted to make purchases before leaving. The retail design plays a significant role in this. The store must also have promotions inside the shop that prompts the consumers to purchase the goods exhibited in the store.

In addition, the retail store should impress the buyers so much that they are compelled to visit the store again for further shopping. Therefore, an expert retail designer will always give adequate importance to the ambience of the shop that would ensure that the buyers have a nice and pleasant time in the shop.

To develop a good retail design, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of marketing basics, space planning and some idea of buyers’ psychology, among other things. It is important that the owner of the retail space understands these concepts in order to communicate the designer about his specific needs and the retail designer comprehends them to properly work as per the needs.

Finally, it is not only the designing of interiors of the store that requires special attention. The outer decor must also be able to attract the potential customers and prompt them to get into the store and check out the goods.
