Today, teddy bears and flowers are preferred gifts for any occasion. At a baby christening, a cuddly stuffed toy is given. It is a box of sterling roses for a wedding anniversary. A stuffed teddy bear plus a bouquet of flowers commemorate a birthday. A sweetheart will enjoy snuggling with a man-sized stuffed Koala while holding her box of pink roses. A his-and-hers teddy bear with a pot of chrysanthemums make a perfect housewarming present.

Special affairs are not even needed in order to give bears and flowers as gifts. One just gives bears and flowers to show love, gratitude, surprise, even condolences and get-well-soon wishes. The practice of giving gifts started out at the onset of the human race. Bartering started the tradition of gift giving, aver historical chronicles. Giving away lands as a form of inheritance was also regarded as a form of gift-giving. Gifts exchanged by the preeminent level of society expressed gratitude, revitalised friendships or earned favors.

Gifts also carry concealed meanings. The Ancient Romans gave coins to signify prosperity, lamps for enlightenment during one’s journey through life, and pastries for happiness. The Three Wise Men gave the Baby Jesus gifts of myrrh, frankincense and gold. The egg, when given as a gift, stood for fertility, according to Persian culture. Giving flowers as a gift could likewise signify love, sincerity, strength of character, etc. etc. Teddy bears symbolize nurture and care. Also evoked are feelings of warmth.

Giving flowers is a tradition that has an early history. Grave sites of long ago have yielded evidence of floral fossils. In Egyptian hieroglyphics, very ancient Chinese writings and even ancient Greek and Roman mythology, accounts of giving flowers are common. Giving flowers was regarded by early cultures as an efficient way of conveying views, ideas and emotions. Flowers were regarded by the Ancient Greeks as correlated with the divine. Giving flowers as presents was sustained throughout the Middle Ages. The French and the English likewise kept the practice of gifting flowers alive.

Meanwhile, the teddy bear was inspired by a hunting incident that concerned former United States President Theodore Roosevelt. It was 1902, and the former President was invited by Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino to go hunting. A black bear was tied by several attendants of President Roosevelt to a willow tree and they asked the former President to shoot it. However, the President declined because he thought it was very unsportsmanlike. The bear was still shot though, upon his orders, to free it of its misery. A political cartoon was inspired by this incident.

Morris Michton was then inspired by this political sketch to make a new toy. This brand-new toy was a stuffed bear cub. He named his creation Teddy’s bear, after the nickname of President Roosevelt. Mr Michton even acquired permission to use the President’s name, after sending him a prototype. In Germany, a stuffed bear was also developed from the designs of Richard Steiff. In March 1903, these toys were shown at the Leipzig Toy Fair. By 1906, there was a full-fledged teddy bear frenzy. As they say, the rest is history.

Definitely, giving teddy bears and flowers as presents is an enduring tradition. By the way, there is a rose called Teddy Bear.
