Sell books online

By Samo Yanezic | April 10, 2009

If you want to sell books online successfully, you should have a love of two things, which are books and money. You dont have to be a book expert to sell books over the internet, but if you have a general interest in books, it will go a long way towards success. The desire to make money will motivate you to make your listings better, and do a little research, which will help you. Over the years, I have made a few bucks selling books online. It has become something of a hobby.

The first book I sold online was several years ago, when I was working in sales. One of the salespeople was cleaning out his desk because he was leaving. He had a new book that was on the subject of selling cars, which he had bought at a seminar he had attended. He said, Maybe this can help you make some money. It didnt help me at all. I took the book, listed it on eBay, and it sold for 75 bucks! The book did help me make money, just not in car sales.

Okay, maybe that one was just luck. You shouldn’t expect to make $75 with every single book you sell. Nonetheless, keep in mind that percentages count. If you buy a book for a dollar and sell it for two fifty, you have made a hundred and fifty percent profit!

There are lots of places you can look for books that you can then sell online for profit. For example, thrift stores are one place. Their stock changes from one week to the next, and sometimes they have truly hidden treasures. Paperbacks usually sell for about a dollar, with hardbacks selling for maybe $3-$4. Garage sales are another place you can look. And sometimes, there, you’ve really do find absolute gems. I know someone who found a particularly rare book there that she bought for a dollar, but she sold it (again, on eBay), for more than 80 times that price! How’s that for a profit? And once you get a little practice under your belt, you’ll be up to find these types of treasures, too — maybe even at used bookstores.

When you sell books online, the type of book you choose to sell is entirely up to you. Most of the good profits I have made came from selling informational type books, such as owner manuals and how to books. If you are thinking about doing this for a living and not just a hobby, it makes sense for you to specialize in a type of book that you enjoy. That way, you have a knowledge and a passion for what you are selling, and that will come across to the buyer.

Avoid buying book club edition books. They’re just reader copies and not worth anything on the market. Books that are over 50 years old with dust jackets are almost always at least somewhat valuable, and first edition books are going to be your most profitable. Second edition books do sell, but you will make the most profit by selling first edition books.

Ive mentioned eBay quite a bit, because it is where I sell most of the books I buy. Its not the only site on the web, however. Amazon and Craigs list are also good sites to sell books.

As you get better at this, you’ll find more sites you can sell on, and eventually you can make some really good money. It’s quite easy to sell books online, and it’s really fun too, especially if you have a passion for the books you sell.
