Before you start your internet business, there are some things you should think about. In order to be successful online, you need to think about a few things. The first thing is for you to understand that whatever you’re going to do marketing-wise, the first step is to plan. Plan ahead what you are going to do. A mistake that a lot of people do is to try to do everything and to try all the things that are out there in the market. What happens is that they end up spending a lot of money and not getting a lot of results.

Most of the time they end up in that trap because they didn’t plan in the first place. They didn’t see what they wanted to achieve; therefore, they just tried everything and didn’t go anywhere.

So you have to start putting something down on the piece of paper. This is important. What are your goals? What kind of budget are you dealing with?

What kind of things do you think that you could do as an approach to your target market? Can you afford it or not? Brainstorm with some friends. Ask what they think. Talk to some experts, and then decide what you’re going to do.

The second thing is to organize yourself. This doesn’t mean you have to put your whole marketing plan together, but at least put together what you are going to do this week, marketing-wise, this month, this semester, this year and next year.

Have that on a piece of paper or on a white board and follow those steps because a lot of temptations come. At first they might look really good, but not always. So you have to have a strategy and follow that.

Organization is key in order to put your plan into practice. It’s very easy to have an idea and have it mapped out in your mind, but it’s not as easy to actually put it into action. Put it down on paper.

By breaking it down into small little chunks one week, one month, one task at a time, it’s easier for you to visualize what you have to get done and you’ll get more completed.

After that you need to think a little about branding yourself. Branding is really important. Most people think branding is only about having a logo. You need to be consistent in everything else you do, including your website.

The key to branding is to have one kind of image in everything you do, from your letterhead, your business cards, your Web site. Everything has to follow this branding, this pattern.

You cannot just say, “Okay, I love red, so I’m going to have the business card red. But my Web site looks so cool in green, and I’m not going to use red there.” Sometimes you use different logos. This is very bad.

So sit down and think how you want your branding to be. This is a good time to go look for an expert because branding will follow your business all the way. So you have to plan and you have to plan the right way. Do spend some money talking to a specialist.

Remember that branding is not only an image. It’s not only associated to your logo. It has to do with your entire image, what you’re conveying. It runs the gamut from being your logo as well as your shirts and the way you talk, the way you present your Web site and everything. Image is king.
