If you are designing a room, whether new or remodeled, you have to determine what you want the room to do. Is that likely to be a casual room people gather inside, or perhaps a room where you will be performing tasks? How much lighting do you need? And will you have to control it on demand?

Point being, there is a great deal to think about. And recess lighting can do most, if not all, of your lighting needs. And with dimmer knobs, allowing you to adjust output when needed – you can’t lose.

Common lighting is also called ambient lighting. This sort of lighting is used to fill the whole spaces; such as dinning rooms, living spaces, and hallways. The lights will span the whole room, so watch your spacing, ensure that it stays neat. You aren’t going to desire a lot of brightness, so research different trims you would need, such as baffles, to help keep that as low as possible. The dimmer switch creates a common look when recess lighting is used as an ambient light source.

Task lighting is simply what it sounds. This is lighting for a particular place, using higher levels, so you can see to do a specific task. You may not be thinking recess lighting will help here but it can. Such as in a kitchen over the island, a toilet in the shower area, or maybe in an office over a desk. Spacing comes into play here as well, since the closer you put the lights together, the brighter the lighted area will be.

Accent lighting, too, is as it sounds. This is where you would like to use light to highlight something; like that new painting you just had hung, the antique sculpture put in the front foyer, or maybe just to highlight an entry way. Anything that might benefit from a brighter light. And if the immediate surrounding area is darker, you will get a more dramatic effect.

No matter what you plan to achieve recess lighting is the medium you use to create the work of genius you have always wanted to stay in.
