Looking For New York Criminal Records Online

By Christopher Evans

According to the U.S. Census records of 2013, New York still stands at number 3 among all the 50 states in the U.S. The State of New York is undeniably the most famous state in the whole wide world for being the center for worldwide trade and economy. The state, as people say, is where dreams do come true as it exerts a considerable influence upon international commerce, finance, media, fashion, art, technology, education, research, and entertainment. In a state like this, it can really be exciting to meet different people, people of various kinds, with various cultures and practices, people from diverse walks of life. Yet, trust is something to consider when engaging with people you barely know, most especially if you wish to build rapport when meeting new friends or even possible lifetime partners. Thus, checking an individual’s background is indeed a great idea. New York criminal records can be accessed from the Division of Justice Criminal Services.

In accordance to the law of the state, all vital records of people, including criminal records, are accessible by anyone in need as New York is an open records state. The Division of Justice Criminal Services is the fundamental repository for the New York’s criminal records. Contained in this Division are the state’s criminal history fingerprint files which provide police departments and other legal agencies all over New York with the criminal records of arrested individuals, and applicants for employment or licensure.

Moreover, the Criminal Identification Unit, which is a part of the said Division, maintains criminal records for the state plus all fingerprints associated with misdemeanor and felony arrests. All requests for criminal records are fingerprint-based searches to guarantee accurate results. A fee of $61.50 is required which consists of the Division of Criminal Justice Services fee of $50 plus a processing fee of $11.50. Another agency which provides criminal records in the state is the New York State Office of Court Administration which offers a state-wide criminal history record search for a fee of $65.00.

In doing background checks, you can refer to the New York State Unified Court System which oversees the Office of Court Administration. The latter is responsible for fulfilling requests for criminal background checks. These two agencies help facilitate the promotion of law and justice within the state. New York is an open records state which means that any member of the public may request for criminal background checks on any individual, although searches are name-based only. Since December 2009, the state of New York has started employing an outside firm called L-1 Identity Solutions to conduct these criminal background checks.

In requesting for personal criminal records, you have to go to the office of L-1 Identity Solutions so you can have your fingerprints taken as searches are based on fingerprints. A request application form must be filled out. You must provide your information as the one making the demand such as your complete name, address, phone number. If you wish to have a background check on another person, provide his or her full name and birthdate. Any pennames should be included on your application in case sealed records not associated to your fingerprints may be found with your request. An application form with indistinguishable or omitted information will be precluded. Each penname and each date of birth is considered an additional search. You have to submit all of your requirements along with a copy of your fingerprints. The usual processing time is seven to ten business days. The results can be mailed, emailed or picked up.

With Internet as the trend, searching for criminal records can be done online too as it is more efficient and more practical compared to the traditional way. You can actually hire the services of several independent online record providers as they also have an online database which you can access anytime you want. Compared to the traditional method, doing an online search for criminal records is by far the most practical way as these online record providers can provide you the records you want in a matter of minutes instead of the usual seven to ten business days. What more, you don’t need to pay for each request you make. What you are only going to pay is a minimal fee and you can already have an unlimited access to their database. With over 19.4 million constituents in New York, it is quite an arduous task to demarcate anyone with a bad record. Thus, checking criminal records is really very essential as it does not only help protect yourself and your loved ones, but also, it is very much useful in the field of business especially when hiring applicants. In business, good relationships between the employers and the employees are very indispensable in creating a productive, profitable and a happy working environment and trust is the major factor in building such relationships. This is where background checks help both entities by verifying the facts and building the level of trust needed for the employers to make hiring decisions with assurance.
