Corporate awards and plaques is one way to reward employees for a job well done. It can be part of a culture shift where the focus is on rewarding all the time in various ways, a general approach of appreciation and reward, and it will have a definite, measurable impact on the work performance of your employees.

Most important is to emphasize and reward success rather than failure, as this cultivates an environment that encourages positive, success-driven attitudes. Rewarding employees meaningfully stems from this simple principle. Management’s focus indicates what is important in the organizational culture.

Ensure that employees understand the criteria against which they will be measured. When staff members are confused about the criteria for success, frustration with the system will follow.

Thanking staff members and celebrating their achievements publicly in meetings and other forums in the company of their peers is a great motivating factor. Your timing in giving recognition is important. The sooner after the achievement, the better, as the impact will be greater. Don’t wait months before recognizing good work.

Sincerity and the personal touch are important. Make sure that any awards are of good quality and speak to the achievement of the staff member to receive the reward.

Real things you can do

Tangible rewards are always appreciated, provided that they suit the individual and his/her needs. Monetary incentives are often governed by company policy and taxation implications, but time is a valuable commodity. Time off for additional hours worked and flexible working hours are regarded as very motivating. Any rewards or bonus scheme should be transparent, and employees should know the parameters of the performance required to be awarded.

If awards and certificates are to be handed to key employees, personalize these. Take a photograph; identify a key performance area that formed the basis for that employee-of-the-month certificate. Peer input in selecting staff members who deserve recognition adds to the perceived value of the award. Selecting high quality awards also adds to how people feel about receiving them.

Training and learning opportunities, bursaries, and other career development incentives can also be used to reward good work.

Team celebrations, picnics, dress-up or dress-down days are all informal, social ways to recognize and encourage good performance. Using humor when rewarding informally can add a sense of fun to the work environment; examples are theme dressing, funny hat days or outrageous sock days.

Where a management team is willing to take the time to personally interact with the work force, they tend to feel more involved, appreciated and motivated. Personal, hand-written notes from managers and supervisors can be very motivating, if sincere.

Remembering your manners by saying please and thank you as required, also have an impact on the general sense of appreciation for work well done.

An open, appreciative work environment, using creativity in your incentive schemes all contributes to a workplace where your workers want to excel.
